VANCOUVER—Just two days after Christmas, the tenants of 732 5th Ave. in New Westminster got an unwelcome present from their landlord. “He made a point that it was a favour that he waited until after Christmas,” said Kyla Yeates, recalling a conversation she had with Chand. The notice said Hawboldt had to leave because Chand planned to house a building caretaker in her suite. “All the renovictions at Christmas time,” he exclaimed in disbelief during the Feb. 4 council meeting. “Who does that?” Through various holding companies, Chand owns six apartment buildings in New Westminster and two buildings in Vancouver.
