‘1917,’ ‘Joker’ Get Big Oscar Boosts From BAFTA Awards


Just as Academy Award voters finish casting their ballots, 1917 was named Best Film at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards, more commonly known as the BAFTAs — the biggest film awards outside the Oscars. Sam Mendes was named best director for 1917, and his epic movie was also Best British Film and took the Best Cinematography award. Parasite, a critically-lauded South Korean movie, won Best Original Screenplay prize and Best Film Not In The English Language. The 92nd Academy Awards are staged on February 9. At the Golden Globes in January, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was Best Motion Picture and 1917 was Best Motion Picture – Drama.
