A reader recently sent me a card which read: “Never underestimate the power of an extremely pissed off woman.” I don’t spend my entire life in a state of high dudgeon, but if the occasional bout of raised blood pressure is in part responsible for The Sunday Times winning more than £600,000 in refunds, savings and compensation for its readers during 2019, then it is definitely worthwhile. Successes range from the £188,273 achieved for Dr Val Sprague, the GP who kindly agreed to waive her anonymity to help readers avoid the problems she has encountered with critical illness insurance (see page 11), to the £13.73 retrieved by a Rotary club from its frozen PayPal account. Some cases were resolved within hours; others took months.
