May 22, 2024 13:20:00[Obituary] Father of the minicomputer, Gordon Bell, passes awayGordon Bell , a computer engineer who designed computers at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) and helped shape the minicomputer industry in the 1960s, died on May 17, 2024 at the age of 89. As an early researcher at DEC, Bell was instrumental in developing smaller, more affordable computers. After retiring from DEC in 1983, Bell continued to work as an entrepreneur, policy advisor, and researcher. In 1987, the Gordon Bell Award was established in his honor to recognize outstanding achievements in high performance computing. 'During my time at Microsoft, Gordon met with me many times, was a sounding board for me, and helped me with problems I was facing,' said Ray Ozzie, a former chief technology officer at Microsoft who studied under Bell at Microsoft Research.
