Valentyn Ogirenko/ReutersUkraine launched a massive drone attack against military and energy facilities in Russia and the occupied peninsula Crimea overnight, with Moscow saying Friday that over 100 unmanned weapons had been involved in the operation. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed its forces had intercepted and destroyed 102 UAVs over four different regions while another six drone boats were taken out in the Black Sea. A source from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) told the Kyiv Independent that the assault was a joint operation conducted by the SBU and Ukraine’s military intelligence. “Today’s operation proved that the Russians are unable to protect their main naval bases in Sevastopol and Novorossiysk,” the source said. Scientists say the heat waves are directly linked to climate change and ocean warming, which are likely to bring even more intense weather events such as cyclones. "Though the warming is basin-wide, the northwestern Indian Ocean including the Arabian Sea will see maximum warming while the intensity will be reduced off the Sumatra and Java coasts in the southeast Indian Ocean," says Koll. "Mid-to-high greenhouse gas emissions will likely see the Indian Ocean experience surface warming of between 1.4°C and 3°C in 2100." On 28 April, Bangladesh recorded 29 days of heat waves, surpassing the previous high of 23 heat wave days in 2019. Aaron Rapoport/Corbis/GettyNEW YORK—The audience at Warner Bros. Discovery’s upfront presentation on Wednesday couldn’t believe the company’s latest reality bet—a new show starring HGTV stars and exes Tarek El Moussa and Christina Hall—so much so that they burst into laughter. WBD’s chairman and CEO of US Networks Kathleen Finch announced the new show The Flip Off, a spinoff of its long-running Flip or Flop, on Wednesday and touted the reunion of the once-married couple. After the crowd erupted into guffaws over the unholy pairing (the couple divorced in 2018 after nine years of marriage, one that included a troubling altercation involving a handgun), Finch reminded the audience of reality TV’s allure. Artificial intelligence hitting labour forces like a “tsunami” - IMF ChiefNewsReuters -Artificial intelligence is hitting the global labour market “like a tsunami” International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said on Monday. Artificial intelligence is likely to impact 60 per cent of jobs in advanced economies and 40 per cent of jobs around the world in the next two years, Georgieva told an event in Zurich. “We are not in global recession,” said Ms. Georgieva, who was heckled by protesters calling for action on climate change and tackling developing world debt. “Last year there were fears that most economies would slip into recession, that didn’t happen,” she said. “Inflation that has hit us with a very strong force is on the decline, almost everywhere.”You can share this post!

While archetypal droughts may develop over seasons, flash droughts are marked by rapid drying. They found a domino effect: In the weeks and months leading up to a flash drought, vegetation initially thrived as conditions turned warm and dry. When extreme temperatures hit, the already low moisture levels plummeted, and flash drought developed within days. Warm temperatures prior to the onset of flash drought tempted plants to increase their carbon uptake compared to normal conditions. More information: Nicholas Parazoo et al, Antecedent Conditions Mitigate Carbon Loss During Flash Drought Events, Geophysical Research Letters (2024).

LateNighter, a website and newsletter that follows late-night television comedy, began operations in February. His 13-year-old son Lem’s obsession with “Saturday Night Live” inspired LateNighter, Rosenzweig says. Asked for an evaluation of LateNighter, former Comedy Central chief executive Doug Herzog said it “seems cool.”“And maybe 10 years too late,” he added. Mulaney’s new effort notwithstanding, streaming hasn’t been able to replicate the late-night comedy genre. Simpson died, it wrote about his impact on late-night comedy.
