LOADING ERROR LOADINGThe Trump administration is trying to quickly and quietly roll back certain civil rights protections in schools by exploiting an administrative loophole and pushing the process through an unusual federal agency — the Department of Energy. AdvertisementDismantling this portion of the law would affect K-12 schools and universities that receive funding from the Energy Department. For one thing, it’s odd that the change, which will affect schools, is coming through the Energy Department instead of the Education Department. “The really concerning part from my perspective is that this could essentially provide a blueprint for dismantling civil rights protections across the board,” Kel O’Hara, senior attorney for policy and education equity at Equal Rights Advocates, told HuffPost. The department’s Office for Civil Rights has already halted thousands of investigations into complaints and closed half of its civil rights enforcement offices.

But there’s one group that continues to surprise me in the best possible way: grandparents of trans youth. ADVERTISEMENTIn our group, grandparents speak openly about mortality — not with fear, but with clarity. One grandmother in Los Angeles told us her teenage grandchild texted her, “Mommy said you’re in a support group for grandparents of trans kids. These grandparents know what it means to be othered — to be told that hiding who you are is the only path to safety. We don’t “take care of veterans” by eliminating — or making it harder for veterans to receive — the services they need. People had died on that day, and at least four Capitol police officers later died by suicide after responding to the carnage that took place there. That’s what we were there for: to sit on the steps of the Capitol Building and tell our message," writes the author. The U.S. Army is marking its 250th birthday with a military parade including roughly 6,600 troops, 150 vehicles, and over 50 aircraft. The parade, which coincides with President Donald Trump's 79th birthday, is designed to tell the history of the U.S. Army. AdvertisementIt followed the two-hour parade down Constitution Avenue, during which Trump primarily sat, appeared bored, but occasionally stood to salute the passing troops and military hardware. And attendance at Trump’s parade was dwarfed by the millions who showed up at roughly 2,000 anti-Trump “No Kings” protests in cities and towns all over the country. Trump, who avoided military service during the Vietnam War thanks to a doctor’s note diagnosing him with “bone spurs,” has wanted a military parade since he took office.

Judge Denise J. Casper of the U.S. District Court in Massachusetts said in Friday’s order that the states had a likelihood of success as to their legal challenges. The ruling is the second legal setback for Trump’s election order. A federal judge in Washington, D.C., previously blocked parts of the directive, including the proof-of-citizenship requirement for the federal voter registration form. The order is the culmination of Trump’s longstanding complaints about elections. The order also would require states to exclude any mail-in or absentee ballots received after Election Day and puts states’ federal funding at risk if election officials don’t comply.
