The centuries-old mystery over Christopher Columbus’s nationality has been revealed by scientists in a Spanish TV documentary after using DNA analysis. Researchers led by forensic expert Miguel Lorente tested tiny samples of remains buried in Seville Cathedral, long marked by authorities there as the last resting place of Columbus, although there had been rival claims. Many historians have questioned the traditional theory that Columbus was from Genoa in north-west Italy. Lorente, briefing reporters on the research on Thursday, had confirmed previous theories that the remains in Seville belonged to the explorer. Columbus died aged 55 in the northwest Spanish city of Valladolid in 1506 but wished to be buried on the island of Hispaniola that is today shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

For example, following the September debate, Harris enjoyed increased favorability ratings, indicating she may have connected strongly with undecided voters. The Harris campaign has recognized the necessity of enthusiastic grassroots engagements. Trump's campaign appears buoyed by economic messaging, capturing voters’ attention with promises of job growth and financial stability. Harris's campaign may have clear opportunities still, but the urgency and gravity embodied within Trump's increasing rallies could perch her under consequential pressure.

Both Harris and Walz have emphasized that they themselves are gun owners, with Harris saying on “60 Minutes” this week that she owns a glock. The biggest headline circulating this morning is Kamala Harris’s medical report, which declares her fit for the presidency. Meanwhile, speaking in Scottsdale, Arizona, Kamala Harris said she would create “a bipartisan council of advisers” if elected president. This morning, Harris released a report on her medical history – in contrast to her opponent who has repeatedly promised and then refused to do the same. The report concludes that Harris “possesses the physical and mental resiliency required to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency”.

Scotland's former leader Alex Salmond, a figurehead of the independence movement, has died at the age of 69, the Scottish National Party (SNP) he once led said Saturday. Scotland's current First Minister and SNP leader John Swinney said he was "deeply shocked and saddened" at the "untimely death". That win smashed the two-party system of Labour and the Conservatives, transforming the Scottish political landscape. As a result, Salmond quit as leader of Scotland and his party, handing over the reins to Nicola Sturgeon. Salmond later became leader of a new pro-independence party the Alba Party, but it has failed to match the political successes of the SNP.

Live scorpion discovered in parcel (Picture credit: X)A college student received an unexpected surprise when she found a live scorpion in a package of boots ordered from the fast-fashion retailer Shein . Sofia Alonso-Mossinger , an 18-year-old electrical and electronic engineering student at the University of Bristol in the UK, made the startling discovery. The Australian’s trademark first-half streak through a hapless Rovers rearguard proved the only try of a bruising but engaging affair, with two kicks from Adam Keighran and a Harry Smith drop-goal nudging Matt Peet’s men to a 9-2 win. Rovers, targeting their first domestic title in four decades, were far from over-awed in their first Grand Final appearance, but failed to take their chances to crack a resolute Wigan defence and had only a Mikey Lewis penalty to show for their efforts. Liam Marshall briefly thought he had extended Wigan’s lead shortly after the opener but his kick through and touch down in the corner was denied for offside in the build-up. Rovers got their first points on the board through a Lewis penalty but the newly-crowned Man of Steel looked far from happy and his silly tip tackle on Farrell allowed Keighran to swiftly restore Wigan’s seven-point lead. Only a brilliant saving tackle from Hall on Jake Wardle denied the favourites what would surely have been the decisive score, but his intervention proved unnecessary as Wigan continued to hold out until the final hooter at which point they started celebrating another major domestic success.

The Transport Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister piled in on P&O this week because of the disgraceful way they treated U.K. staff a couple of years ago. P&O is owned by DP World and it looks like thanks to the above (as reported) they have decided investment in two new docking births for the container operation will no longer happen and nor will attendance at Starmer’s investment summit. They knew Starmer’s little gathering was next week, so I can only assume the timing was deliberate to pressure DP World and it’s blown up in their face? Not always the case by any means, but this does strike me in this instance as moral high ground v jobs, business, taxes for services. They got away with an easy tax settlement because they made it clear that if that didn’t happen, U.K. jobs were toast as they could locate anywhere.

A Facebook post by Councillor Carl Quartermain pictured a newly resurfaced road and read: “Best roads in the country now according to the Department of Transport.”The post was followed by a thumbs up emoji. Cllr Quartermain, the cabinet member for highways and transport, then doubled down on it at a recent meeting of the full council describing the “notable achievement”. This led some councillors to question the claim and give examples of poor quality roads in their areas, including veteran councillor Steve Kay, who represents the rural Lockwood ward. Less than one per cent of A roads needed intervention due to the condition of the carriageway, less than four per cent when it came to B and C roads and less than nine per cent in terms of unclassified roads. The scores were said to place the council in the top five in the country when it came to carriageway condition.

Australian Police Sergeant Faces Charges For Nazi Salute Victoria state police chief issues apology as community reacts to shocking behaviorAn Australian police sergeant is likely to face charges after allegedly performing an outlawed Nazi salute and making associated remarks during training sessions at the Victoria state police academy. The specifics of the investigation are under wraps, but police officials are preparing to move forward with charges, likely via summons. Dvir Abramovich, chair of the Anti-Defamation Commission, publicly commended the police for their immediate response, labeling the Nazi salute not merely as symbolic but as part of a broader historical narrative of terror and genocide. “A Nazi salute isn’t just a gesture—it’s a horrifying symbol,” Abramovich declared, expressing grave concern over how such actions might tarnish the image of law enforcement agencies tasked with upholding public safety. Adding to the discourse, the Police Association of Victoria weighed in on the matter, urging strict adherence to community standards among officers.
