Wealth creators, entrepreneurs, innovators, growth seekers — whatever we call them, this group of achievers and risk takers are an essential part of the economy. Yet with just over two weeks until the budget, it is fair to say there is some disquiet among Britain’s entrepreneurs. The overriding sentiment from ministers in recent months has been bleak and some of the much-needed confidence and stability ushered in by the new government after its election victory has started to slip. All of which means the chancellor’s announcement on October 30 is shaping up to be the most important budget in at least a decade, and probably since George Osborne’s first budget in 2010. • October Budget 2024 predictions: what could Rachel Reeves announce?

The UK's foreign minister will join European ministers at the Foreign Affairs Council for the first time in two years on Monday, as the new government looks to "reset" relations with the continent. David Lammy will join with the group of 27 EU foreign ministers for talks in Luxembourg on the Middle East and the war in Ukraine, the Foreign Office said in a press release. Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, issued the invitation, which followed Prime Minister Keir Starmer's recent visit to Brussels where he "committed to move beyond" the UK's departure from the EU. Lammy said the government was "determined to reset our relationships and deepen ties with our European partners in order to make us all safer. The ministry highlighted Ukraine as "a prime example of how UK-EU collaboration makes a tangible impact," pointing to joint sanctions on Russia, coordinated training of Ukrainian troops and the mutual work on humanitarian support.

Environmental organizations have been calling for additional funding for wildlife disease preparedness for many months. He Jack Gough, advocacy director for the Invasive Species Council welcomed the additional funding:This is incredible news. The Albanian government is finally investing a significant amount in preparation for what could be the worst environmental disaster in Australia's history. This level of funding will allow departments to get on with the task of adequately preparing to save wildlife and stop extinctions if the deadly bird flu reaches our shores. We won't be able to prevent this disease from arriving, but we know that vaccination, removing carcasses and stopping disturbance can reduce mortality rates and save species such as the Tassie devil, sea lions and black swans.

Salmond's political career spanned decades, and his influence on the Scottish independence movement was undeniable, advancing discussions and aspirations for autonomy like no other figure. Following his death, tributes poured in from various political leaders, reflecting on his contributions and the legacy he leaves behind. Salmond was notoriously charismatic and had the unique ability to ignite passion for Scottish independence among supporters. His tenure as SNP leader laid the groundwork for the 2014 independence referendum, where the dream of independence was nearly realized. Despite the loss of the vote—55% against 45% for staying in the UK—the campaign itself strengthened the case for Scottish independence and mobilized supporters across the nation.

After three wins from four games as England interim coach, Lee Carsley appeared to distance himself from taking on the job permanently. A 3-1 victory against Finland in the Nations League saw England get back to winning ways after the shock 2-1 home loss to Greece. However Carsley sounded uncertain about his credentials to succeed Gareth Southgate in one of the biggest management roles in world football. 'This will be up there with the best jobs in football. Whoever gets it is going to be at a high level'.

Pep Guardiola has claimed 'anything can happen' in relation to his next step in football, as the Catalan coach continues to be linked with the England job. It's reported Carsley has no interest in taking the job on a full-time basis with Guardiola among those being touted as a possible replacement. But when quizzed about whether he's in line to take over, Guardiola remained coy, telling Che Tempo Che Fa: "I haven't finished my career at Manchester City yet, I still have to think about it. I haven't decided anything yet, if I had decided my future at Manchester City I would say so, anything can happen in life." Long-time Pep Guardiola ally Txiki Begiristain is due to leave City this summer.

In that time, and indeed in the time leading up to the referendum itself, I repeatedly expressed my views. But while Indigenous community members have had to pick up the pieces, regroup and begin discussions about the way forward, the majority of Australia has maintained the status quo. This means the Labor government honouring the treaty process that is part of the Uluru Statement that they said they were committed to implementing upon their election. There are so many ways this country could commit not only to a healthier and more equitable way forward, but also to a more tolerant and racially diverse society. I truly hope that in my lifetime we are never faced with another toxic campaign like the voice referendum again.
