Derby Arboretum, which is England’s oldest park, has been named among ‘Seven of the UK’s most glorious arboretums for autumn’ by The Times. There are now more than 40 arboretums in the UK, and The Times has picked the seven that it believes are most spectacular in autumn – with Derby Arboretum heading that list. Masterminded in 1840 by the Victorian botanist John Claudius Loudon, Derby Arboretum is a Grade II* listed park. Earlier this year Derby Arboretum was among six parks maintained by the city council to be awarded Green Flag status. In addition to listing the best arboretums, The Times article also suggests places to visit and stay – in Derby’s case, it recommends visiting Derby Museums’ Museum of Making.

It is a shocking state of affairs and reported widely on the World Service but it's not unique in being ignored in much of the media. If there's no Western interest, what goes on in the world is largely ignored. You only have to take the coverage of the recent hurricane in Florida, when disasters much worse elsewhere in the world end up as no more than a footnote. As an aside, UK media coverage is much more focused on the US than Europe. The British press is extremely centralised, and most of it is owned by wealthy men who have every motive to be dishonest on certain important topics."

American research group Ocearch has more than 15 years’ experience in catching, tagging and tracking great white sharks all over the world, contributing to filling in the many gaps in knowledge about the ocean predator. Due to decades of overfishing, pollution and poaching in European waters, these sharks are now critically endangered, with huge consequences lower down the food chain. Ocearch believe that in showing these sharks are present in the east Atlantic, they can kickstart a collective move towards healthier, abundant seas – they just need to prove they are there.
