Bridget Phillipson said increasing the £9,250 maximum tuition fees for domestic students to £9,535 next year had “not been an easy decision”. University tuition fees will rise for the first time in eight years to help universities facing “severe financial challenges”, the Education Secretary said. The previous government raised the cap on university tuition fees in England to £9,000 per year in 2012, but it has been frozen at £9,250 for domestic undergraduate students since 2017. University tuition fees will rise in line with inflation, by 3.1%, and the changes will come into effect from the 2025/26 academic year. Following the announcement on Monday, Jo Grady, general secretary of the UCU, said the hike to tuition fees was “both economically and morally wrong”.

It is hard to rank Quincy Jones’s work because it stretched over such a wide range. Comparing the pop innocence of, say, his production of Lesley Gore’s It’s My Party with the dirty funk of Jones’s own Cool Joe, Mean Joe (Killer Joe) is a fool’s errand. What really shines through, though, is his way of masking any complexities under a carapace of the things that make music flow by yet stick in the mind: tunefulness, grooviness, something unique to make it stand out. With that in mind, here are ten of the best, spanning the length and breadth of his varied career. Jones threw himself into disco funk abandon with a surprise cover of a song by the British singer Chaz Jankel, former member

As the sun rose on Sunday, thousands of runners packed into Fort Wadsworth, a 226-acre park on the eastern shore of Staten Island, where the New York City Marathon was set to kick off. It’s my first time doing the New York City Marathon or any other marathon. My run club has this checkered shirt that is inspired by New York taxi cabs but also the finish line flag. I wore it for my first marathon and that went well, so I guess it’s a good look. This is my 18th marathon, but my first time doing it in New York City.

When WH Smith is stocking vinyls for the first time in 30 years, you know the revival is more than just a fad. When an album exists only in digital form, it doesn’t possess much in the way of transporting power or allure. In our age of constant digital distraction this is an appealing prospect, not just for listeners but for artists too. Streaming payouts are minuscule, CD sales are in freefall, and who doesn’t want their creative efforts captured on what might one day be a classic

Lee Hsien Yang, a member of the family that led Singapore for decades after its independence from British rule, said on Tuesday that he had been granted political asylum in Britain and accused his nation of persecuting him throughout his brother’s tenure as prime minister. Mr. Lee said in a statement posted on Facebook that the United Kingdom had determined that he faced the risk of political persecution and could not safely return to Singapore, granting the asylum protection he applied for in June 2022. “I never imagined in my worst nightmares that I would end up becoming a refugee from a country that my father built,” he said in a phone interview from London, where he and his wife have lived for two years. “But that’s the circumstance that I find myself in.”Mr. Lee is the youngest child of Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s first prime minister, who declared the country’s independence from British colonial rule in 1963. Mr. Lee’s older brother, Lee Hsien Loong, was Singapore’s prime minister for 20 years in a term that ended earlier this year, and he remains as a senior minister and secretary-general of the ruling People’s Action Party.

It’s to make gains with West Virginia voters by running against not Donald Trump but Governor Justice. Like President Biden, Elliott also has a history of stuttering and has been vocal about criticizing Trump over mocking people with this issue. It’s about ensuring that every woman in West Virginia and across this great nation retains the right to privacy, to healthcare, and to choose.

In a unanimous decision, the Santa Barbara Board of Supervisors recently declared All Saints by-the-Sea Episcopal Church a historic landmark. The decision to nominate All Saints by-the-Sea Episcopal Church came after the Historic Landmarks Advisory Commission (HLAC) reviewed its qualifications in September, finding it met the criteria for landmark status. However, the landmark designation process was not without its debates. These views, considered by some as integral to the church’s historical significance, were contested. Amber Long, representing All Saints through Long Historic Preservation Services, argued for the inclusion of the views as part of the church’s landmark status.
