The United Kingdom is no longer the most ambitious nation in the world when it comes to cutting carbon dioxide emissions in the fight against climate change over the next decade. Denmark’s climate minister, Lars Aagaard, announced this week that his government would submit a binding target to cut emissions by 82% by 2035 compared with 1990 levels. That’s one percentage point more than the U.K. goal set out earlier this year. In Denmark we will continue to show that ambitious climate action can go hand in hand with a competitive economy and strong social cohesion.”Denmark is one of the most progressive countries in the European Union on climate change and has pivoted its economy to benefit from clean technologies. By comparison, the EU submitted to the United Nations a pledge to cut the bloc’s emissions by between 66.3% and 72.5%.

It added that targets would “typically be approached to work as freelance consultants authoring geopolitical reports.” Chinese intelligence officers had “a low threshold for what information is considered to be of value,” it said, but “individual pieces of information fit into a wider collection effort.”A statement posted to the website of the Chinese Embassy in London on Tuesday said: “These claims by the U.K. side are pure fabrication and malicious slander. We strongly condemn such despicable moves of the U.K. side and have lodged stern representations with them.”Last month, Ken McCallum, the director general of MI5, said in a speech that China was engaging in cyberespionage and the theft of advanced secrets, and had conducted “efforts to interfere covertly in U.K. public life.”The alert sent to members of Parliament on Tuesday had the potential to revive the political debate over the case dropped in September. The decision not to bring the case to trial roiled politics in London for weeks. Senior members of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government have repeatedly said that it was the decision of Stephen Parkinson, the director of public prosecutions, to drop the case against Christopher Cash, a parliamentary researcher, and Christopher Berry, a teacher. Mr. Parkinson said that the government’s unwillingness to call China a threat at the time the pair were detained meant he could not charge them under the Official Secrets Act.

Price rises cooling off across the UK could offer some respite for households after inflation has remained at the same level for three months in a row. Elevated food and drink prices have been putting pressure on overall inflation this year, with households seeing steep rises particularly for items such as chocolate, coffee, cheese and eggs. Experts think food price inflation could continue to ease in October. Furthermore, energy costs are expected to be an important factor putting downward pressure on the overall inflation rate. Ofgem raised the energy price cap by 2% in October, but this is significantly less than the 9.6% hike last year, meaning energy price inflation is set to fall.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer hopes Britain’s restrictive new policy on asylum seekers will give him a grip on a feverish immigration debate that is threatening his government. But the harsh new rules are already eliciting charges of “performative cruelty,” not least from lawmakers in his own Labour Party. Britain is emulating Denmark, which has set out to make the lives of refugees as uncomfortable as possible to deter others from following them. Immigration experts have labeled this approach, parts of which have been tried by other Scandinavian countries, “negative nation branding.”Whether going negative, however, will cause the number of arrivals to Britain to fall as it did in Denmark is an open question. Moreover, experts say, the policy could have a corrosive long-term effect on legal immigrants, who often feel targeted by the government’s hostile messaging.

A SCHOOLGIRL stabbed a woman 143 times then left her body in a burnt-out home for police to find in a pre-meditated murder, a court heard. Jurors heard a 13-year-old girl, who can’t be named, initially claimed a third party had attacked the mum-of-three. Jurors heard Marta was declared dead at the scene after her body was pulled from the smoke-filled living room of the property into a hallway. The court also heard the girl has admitted unlawfully killing Marta but denies murder, claiming diminished responsibility. “We say it is murder because she planned the killing, and we say it is murder because she lied about what she did.
