The caption for this photo from the May 24, 1946 Boston Traveler reads:"I Been Workin' on the Railroad"--but that was once upon a time. Redcap Charlie Hughes of Roxbury sits dejectedly alongside the South Station's deserted tracks and wonders how long the strike will last. He is but one of thousands throughout the country whose livelihood stopped when strike began. The strike was a rejection of both what the railroads were offering and a "compromise" pay increase proposed by Truman. In the end, Charlie Hughes didn't have to wait too long to return to his job ferrying passengers' bags from the South Station doors to their trains: On May 26, the unions, under intense pressure from Washington, gave in and accepted Truman's offer, as did the railroads.

With just under two weeks to go until the summer transfer window opens, Premier League clubs are putting the finishing touches on their plans ahead of what promises to be an enthralling few months of business. Chelsea have already set the wheels in motion for their spending spree under Enzo Maresca, hijacking Newcastle’s move for free agent Tosin Adarabioyo to lure the central defender to Stamford Bridge. The move for the 26-year-old is likely to prompt the Blues to part ways with at least one of their homegrown stars, which could be music to the ears of Manchester United and Liverpool. United are considering a move for Trevoh Chalobah and will be encouraged by Adarabioyo’s decision to join the Blues, whilst Liverpool are long-term admirers of Levi Colwill. Trump is now a convicted felon. Here's what that could mean for his rightsFor the first time in United States history, a former -- and quite possibly future -- president is now officially a convicted felon. Though Florida -- where Trump is registered to vote -- prohibits people convicted of felonies from voting until their sentence is complete, New York law will allow him to maintain his voting rights. In New York, felons are only barred from voting if they are currently incarcerated, and voting rights are automatically restored upon their release from prison. Trump is now a convicted felon.

Other than that:• New South Wales Liberal Senator Hollie Hughes was dumped to fourth position on the Coalition ticket after running third in a Liberal preselection vote last weekend, the third position on the ticket being reserved to the Nationals. The top places will go to moderate incumbent Andrew Bragg and conservative challenger Jess Collins, who earlier ran unsuccessfully for preselection in North Sydney and for Marise Payne’s Senate vacancy. • The second position on Labor’s Queensland Senate ticket appears set to go to Corrine Mulholland, in-house lobbyist at Star casinos and the party’s candidate for Petrie in 2022. This follows the withdrawal of her two mooted rivals, former state minister Kate Jones and former Townsville mayor Jenny Hill. The government also hopes to introduce truth-in-advertising laws and real-time disclosure of campaign donations of greater than $10,000.

Rivers, lakes and tap water in areas of Bangladesh that host garment factories are swarming with dangerous levels of toxic “forever chemicals”, some with links to serious health issues, according to new research. In the first study of its kind conducted in Bangladesh, a global fashion hub supplying international brands, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as forever chemicals, were found in 27 water samples collected close to textile factories in the capital, Dhaka. In many of the samples, taken in 2019 and 2022, PFAS levels were far above regulatory limits set in the EU and the US, while several contained one or more globally banned chemicals, according to the report by the Environment and Social Development Organization (Esdo) and Ipen, a network of NGOs. – theguardian.com

There's a wonderful anecdote from the time the great Don Bradman was out for a duck in New York. That breach of cricketing etiquette, in an era of fusty formality, was sufficient to slightly irk Bradman as he walked from his crease. But when the bowler then proceeded to stuff his cap with US dollar bills collected from the crowd, Bradman was aghast. Just under a century later, as the United States prepares to co-host the T20 World Cup, such brazen profiteering from cricket might be perceived in a different light. The US has been a project of the International Cricket Council (ICC) for more than two and a half decades.

To succeed on appeal, Trump, 77, must demonstrate that Justice Juan Merchan made significant errors overseeing the trial. If Trump’s appeal in New York state courts proves unsuccessful, he could appeal to the US Supreme Court. “How can we come back from this in a way that’s fair to President Trump?” Blanche said outside the jury’s presence on May 7. In urging Merchan to dismiss the case last year, Trump’s lawyers argued that New York state law did not apply to federal elections. George Grasso, a retired New York state judge who attended the trial, said the defense would be unlikely to succeed in a challenge to that decision.
