It must be a huge burden for Assange to carry the knowledge that WikiLeaks is partly (largely?) Peter Barry writes: It is a relief to have Julian Assange back on Australian soil. It is almost axiomatic that (if elected) the Coalition would declare that it’d been hoodwinked by some nefarious bastards and that nuclear power wasn’t really an option. Julia Bovard writes: I totally agree that legislation should require political donations to be transparent and traceable to something more substantial than a post office box. What is the function of political donations?
The number of climate lawsuits against corporations worldwide has surged, with over 230 cases filed since 2015, mostly after 2020. The US led with 129 cases filed in 2023, followed by the UK with 24. New climate litigation cases emerged in Panama and Portugal in 2023, adding to the 55 countries recording such cases. A growing number of cases were filed in the global south. The rise in climate-washing cases reflects growing scrutiny of environmental claims, which could lead to more honest and effective corporate climate actions.

Manchester United have reportedly made their first offer to Matthijs de Ligt with the defender now waiting on Bayern Munich to agree a transfer fee with the Red Devils. Erik ten Hag is said to have made signing De Ligt a priority this summer, having previously worked with the Dutchman at Ajax. According to Dutch publication De Telegaaf, the former Juventus defender is waiting on both clubs to agree a transfer fee, which would give him the green light to complete a move to England. Bayern paid £65m to sign De Ligt from Juventus in 2022. However, wide-ranging reports suggest that United will not have to pay as substantial a fee as that to lure him from Germany.

This should go down as one of England's all-time miracle comebacks because they were heading home in humiliation. Then Jude Bellingham provided a moment of genius and salvation to send England into a quarter-final with Switzerland in Dusseldorf on Saturday. They looked like 11 strangers while Slovakia - 40 places below fifth-placed England in the FIFA rankings - were sharper, better and menacing. Image: Getty Images) Getty Images)Then, came the drama. Eventually, the final whistle came and England finished as the most unlikely heroes.

Sir, In the wake of the TV debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, it is clear to all objective observers that the president needs to step down to make way for a younger candidate who will have a chance of winning in November (news, leading article, letter, Jun 29). This may not happen for a variety of reasons: Biden’s “determination”, the wheels of party procedure, a reticence among Democrats to “break ranks” or a state of denial. None of these or other reasons are weighty enough to justify not acting decisively before the Democratic convention in August. The alternative is a predictable election night with all the recriminations and post-factum regrets customary on such occasions. Russell PhillipsBury, LancsSir,
The Three Lions were on the verge of exiting the tournament in the round of 16 at the hands of Slovakia. With the score 1-0 to Slovakia in the 95th minute, Bellingham acrobatically met a headed Marc Guehi flick-on inside the box with a brilliant finish to make it 1-1. ITV's cameras followed the Real Madrid midfielder as he darted off in celebration, with the player clearly saying: 'Who else?' comment speaks volumes about how much he backs himself to produce in the moments of highest pressure. He produced time and time again for Real Madrid last season.
Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has said he remains unsure if he'll be fit in time for this year's tournament. Murray had surgery after he was forced to withdraw from the Queen's Club Championship through injury, and while he's set to open his tournament on Tuesday, Murray admitted he's not certain if he'll play. "Obviously had the operation on the back, which wasn't insignificant," Murray said. "Just been trying to do everything that I can to try and get ready to start the tournament here." "Like I said a few days ago, I want to give it every single chance that I can to get there."
