Bradley Gravett endured a challenging weekend in the Vertu Mini Challenge Series, finishing 11th before failing to finish the second race on the tight, twisting, circuit at Oulton Park. The issue was fixed for the second session and Gravett was finally able to get some meaningful preparation under his belt, and this boosted confidence heading into Saturday's qualifying. The lack of practice cost him however, as rivals made greater improvements to leave Gravett down in ninth place. “I’m sure there are words to describe how the weekend panned out at Oulton Park, but I’m struggling to find them,” he said. “I think it’s fair to say that that was as good as things got however, as the race weekend itself just didn’t go my way.

This new charter was to be an upgrade from the failed predecessor of the United Nations, known as the League of Nations. It would be a grave injustice to think that United Nations has been a complete failure in all aspects. In 2022, the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) assisted 160 million people worldwide. This ominous flaw in the United Nations was pointed out just three years into its formation.

MELBOURNE: Australia's education minister Jason Clare said the country has more than doubled the cost of student visa fees for international students because education is an incredibly important national asset. "We need to ensure its integrity and quality," he said. The fee hike move has, however, triggered outrage from student groups. Yeganeh Soltanpour, the national president of the Council of International Students Australia, said the fee increase, combined with high deposit costs, places extra strain on international students. "The possibility of spending all that money only to face rejection is quite disheartening... He said this change could drive prospective students to the UK, Australia's closest competitor, which currently charges $900 for student visa fees.

A big math conference was underway and Dr. Rokicki, a retired programmer based in Palo Alto, Calif., had helped organize a two-day special session about “serious recreational mathematics” celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Rubik’s Cube. Dr. Rokicki instead recommends the old-fashioned strategy: Set out on a lone path and discover a solving method, even if it takes weeks or months. (It took the computer scientist Donald Knuth less than 12 hours, starting at his dining table in the evening and working straight through to the morning.) Mr. Rubik said that, yes, he indeed did corners-first. Mr. Rubik, who is known to take a philosophical approach to cubology and to life in general, added: “My method was understanding.”‘Cubitus magikia’

LONDON: British manufacturing activity growth slowed last month from May's 22-month high as ongoing disruption to shipping in the Red Sea contributed to lower demand from overseas customers, a survey showed on Monday.S&P Global's UK Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index dropped to 50.9 in June from 51.2 in May. The final reading was lower than 51.4 in the provisional June data.S&P said the broad picture was positive, with output and new orders both rising, but employment fell, delivery times lengthened and manufacturers' input costs rose at the fastest pace since January 2023. "Shipping issues resulting from the Red Sea crisis , low stocks at suppliers, insufficient vendor capacity and port issues all led to longer lead times," S&P said. While output and overall new orders grew at close to their fastest pace in two years, export orders fell for a 29th successive month, due to the shipping delays and high freight costs. International shipping has been disrupted since November by attacks launched by Yemen's Houthi militants, an Iran-aligned group who say the attacks are in solidarity with Palestinians in the war between Israel and militant Islamist group Hamas. Many vessels have opted to avoid the Red Sea route to the Suez Canal, taking the longer journey around the southern tip of Africa instead.Official figures on Friday showed Britain's manufacturing sector - which makes up 10% of the economy - grew at a quarterly pace of 1.1% in the first three months of 2024, its second-strongest quarterly expansion since the start of 2021.Goods exports volumes fell by 3.5% in the first quarter, although Britain's Office for National Statistics said this largely reflected trading in non-monetary gold - an erratic item which often distorts British trade statistics.

Keir Starmer, the leader of Britain’s Labour Party, nodded sympathetically as a young mother recalled, in harrowing terms, how she had watched closed-circuit television footage of the fatal stabbing of her 21-year-old son, whose heart was pierced with a single blow. “Thank you for that,” a somber Mr. Starmer said to the woman and other relatives of victims of knife attacks, as they stood around a wooden table last week, discussing ways to combat violent crime. “It’s really, really powerful.”It was not the most feel-good campaign event for a candidate the week before an election that his opposition party is widely expected to win. But it was entirely in character for Mr. Starmer, a 61-year-old former human rights lawyer who still behaves less like a politician than a prosecutor bringing a case. Earnest, intense, practical and not brimming with charisma, Mr. Starmer finds himself on the cusp of a potential landslide victory without the star quality that marked previous British leaders on the doorstep of power, whether Margaret Thatcher, the 1980s free-market champion, or Tony Blair, the avatar of “Cool Britannia.”

Avoiding plastic at the beach can be challenging, but sustainable alternatives are available for swimwear, toys and more. For toys and beach accessories, consider borrowing from toy libraries or opting for silicon and bioplastic items. Key quote:“If you’re looking for plastic-free nirvana, you may never find it.”— Anne-Marie Soulsby, aka the Sustainable Lifecoach. Why this matters:Reducing plastic use at the beach helps preserving our oceans and the wildlife that inhabits them. Marine pollution, largely driven by single-use plastics, wreaks havoc on sea creatures, from fish and turtles to birds and marine mammals.
