Jala Debella, 24, allegedly carried out the “senseless attack” on Anita Mukhey, 66, in North London, at around 11.50am on May 9, 2024. This mean the jury must determine whether Debella had killed Anita, as the evidence “most strongly” suggested. Debella allegedly had a “particular interest in very violent videos” online, which depicted extreme violence with knives and other weapons. After he returned home, Debella allegedly searched the internet for “knife”, “gore video” and “breaking news“.

Ms Mukhey died at 12.22pm despite efforts of medics and police, the Old Bailey heard. On Monday (January 19), jurors were told that Debella was unwell and could not attend court as prosecutor Jonathan Polnay KC opened a trial of the facts. Mr Polnay told jurors their task was to determine whether Debella had killed Ms Mukhey, as the evidence “most strongly” suggested. CCTV then picked up the defendant walking north in Edgware Road, past a bus stop and then returning to the scene where Ms Mukhey was attacked. Forensic analysis showed it had DNA from Debella and Ms Mukhey on it, the court was told.

The organisation says its Access to Politics Charter is a “groundbreaking” step towards tackling Wales’s democratic “representation gap”. Developed by the Access to Politics Grassroots Network, made up largely of disabled people and Welsh Government-funded, the Charter sets out “practical measures” to dismantle barriers preventing many would-be candidates from entering public life. Political parties must create “safe, confidential spaces” for candidates to disclose impairments or health conditions “without fear of prejudice”.
