TLDRGovernment data reveals that at least 4 million salmon died prematurely at Tasmanian fish farms in 2025, with about 500,000 fish dying in November and December due to warmer ocean temperatures. The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) data shows that over 2,500 tonnes of salmon died in the last three months of 2025, bringing the death toll for the year to 20,133 tonnes lost before being processed for public consumption. Scientific studies indicate that Atlantic salmon are adversely affected when ocean temperatures approach 18C, leading to less oxygenated water, liver and kidney damage, decreased appetite, and increased vulnerability to disease. Calls for companies to be fined under animal welfare legislation have emerged, as the RSPCA has made it clear that salmon feel pain, and there has been no apparent regulatory action over the mass salmon deaths. In contrast, Norway imposes significant fines for mass fish deaths at salmon farms.

Last updated: 27 Jan. 2026"The US finds itself on its own given 194 nations are still in the Paris Agreement, working towards the aim of stabilising the world’s climate, reaching net zero emissions being the only scientific way of doing that. This will be the second time the US walks out, last time during that absence between 2016 to 2020, global clean energy investment increased by nearly half again [2]. "Trump’s focus on fossil fuels is creating problems at home with volatile gas prices pushing up power prices for Americans just as the administration steps back from the home grown renewables that would protect them. With China’s emissions seemingly starting to fall [3], and their demand for oil levelling off, not even Trump’s attempted raid on Venezuela’s oil will put the US on anything other than the back foot as the rest of the world presses on with the economic transition to net zero."
Artificial intelligence is costing the UK more jobs than its creating compared to its rival economies, according to new research. A study by Wall Street investment bank, Morgan Stanley, found that British companies using AI reported a net 8% decline in jobs over the past 12 months, double the average reported by companies in the Unites States, Germany, Japan and Australia. The research surveyed companies using AI for at least a year across five sectors, including retail, transport, healthcare equipment and cars. However, it also suggests the UK is struggling with the rise of artificial intelligence as its rival economies created more jobs than it cut. The UK fell behind with new hires with companies saying AI had created only 15% more roles.
Chomiq Try to resale a game on PC and you'll know why console players insists on having physical discs. This is true... but then I try to remember what console games I sold and what I sold them at.It wasn't really making waves :P And even now, unless you have some rare, mint condition, collectors' or limited run physical box/disc, you can find even PS2 games for under $5,- a pop. And if you move further forward to today, everything from the Xbox 1 and PS3 onward (and also prior to) is getting remastered, re-released, or emulated. What's more, the hardware isn't always quite as functional as you'd want, while recent hardware runs the content well, often even better.
The US fleet including several guided-missile destroyers are not yet in final position but are already in striking range of Iran. With no signs of a diplomatic breakthrough imminent, the Iranian stock market suffered a record daily fall on Monday. Ali Larijani, the secretary of Iran’s supreme national security council, claimed the US was trying to destroy Iran’s social cohesion before an attack. When they rush toward military and police centres to obtain weapons, it indicates that they are seeking to provoke a civil war. Many Iranians resent Trump’s failure so far to hold good on his promise to come to the help of the protesters.

It is telling that the most significant, scathing critiques of and warnings about the consequences of this technology come from the “Godfather of AI”, Nobel Laureate Geoffrey Hinton. He has tirelessly and concertedly campaigned for the redistribution of wealth and tighter regulations to offset the palpable pernicious consequences for AI (Hern, 2023; Hinton, 2025; Sanders and Hinton, 2025). A demonstration at a Minneapolis hotel where protesters believed federal agents were staying turned heated on Sunday evening, with law enforcement reportedly using chemical irritants to clear the scene after some demonstrators vandalized the building. Protesters gathered at the Home2 Suites by Hilton near the University of Minnesota, according to the Minnesota Daily, where they believed federal immigration agents were staying after the killing of Alex Pretti. Video shows two federal officers with long guns standing outside the hotel lobby as protesters gather. “While they collaboratively worked to encircle the group for arrests because the demonstration was not peaceful, federal agents arrived without communication and deployed chemical irritants, clearing the group,” the DPS said in a post. Tim Walz, the Democratic Minnesota governor who was Kamala Harris’s running mate when she lost the 2024 presidential election to Trump, has urged the White House to withdraw federal immigration enforcement agents from the city.

TLDRA federal court in Minneapolis is hearing arguments on whether the Trump administration's deployment of 3,000 immigration agents to Minnesota constitutes an illegal occupation of the state. Lawyers for Minnesota and the cities of Minneapolis and St Paul claim that Operation Metro Surge has become so intrusive and dangerous that it amounts to an illegal occupation of the state. The case centers on the 10th amendment, which reserves to the states all powers not explicitly granted to the federal government in the constitution.
TLDRThe White House quickly changed its stance on the killing of Alex Pretti by federal agents after video footage contradicted initial claims that he was a gunman. Senior officials, including Stephen Miller and Kristi Noem, had called Pretti a domestic terrorist, but the video showed he was shot in the back after being tackled and disarmed. The administration is now avoiding commenting on the remarks and is instead focusing on the outcome of investigations. Trump has also agreed to allow state investigators to conduct an independent investigation and to look into reducing the number of federal agents in Minnesota.

Extreme weather events (EWEs) are known to significantly impact pharmacy operations, infrastructure, and products, according to a study published in Public Health.1 In turn, this often translates to the need for greater individual awareness among patients self-managing their medications—what researchers considered community health resilience. One of the more obvious impacts is that extreme cold can lead to snowstorms that significantly impact pharmacy access during extended periods of time. However, in light of recent events across many US regions, health systems and their communities can never be too prepared for potential system-wide disruptions. The impacts of extreme weather events on health services and systems: a systematic review of reviews. Harrabin R. NASA data reveals dramatic rise in intensity of weather events.
