I’m a Burberry (LON:BRBY) shareholder and have held the stock for a number of years. My decision to invest was based on the traditional resilience of the luxury market, and my view that Burberry is a valuable and durable heritage brand. The luxury market has slowed and Burberry has suffered additional self-inflicted problems. This Stock Pitch is an effort to clarify my thinking on Burberry. As the smallest company in the index at present, I imagine it’s quite likely Burberry will be demoted to the FTSE 250 in the next index reshuffle.

The collective total for the new mandatory housebuilding target would rise from 300,000 a year to 370,000 under Labour, with an obligation to build homes in all areas, Angela Rayner told MPs in parliament. Councils in England could be forced to build on low-quality green belt sites to meet mandatory targets as part of a government shake-up of planning rules. Under the new regime all local authorities will have a duty to deliver more homes, and unless they produce a clear plan for how this will happen, ministers could step in and take over the process

It’s clear that environmental health professionals are crucial in identifying, preventing, and subsequently tackling outbreaks of foodborne illnesses. Supplementing permanent workforce shortages through agencies isn’t only financially unsustainable, costing £20.7m in the 2022-23 financial year,5 it’s also ineffective for delivering statutory environmental health duties that require trained environmental health professionals. The new government should protect public health by adequately funding local authorities’ environmental health teams, with sufficient ringfenced funding for apprentices and trainees. This will help grow the pipeline to environmental health and encourage the next generation of environmental health professionals. Tackling the funding and workforce challenges across environmental health is vital to ensure the UK’s health is safeguarded.
