The attack killed two people and seriously injured four others. I am horrified by today’s reports of an attack at a synagogue in Manchester, UK on Yom Kippur. He said “additional police assets” were being sent to protect synagogues across the country. “It’s this new feeling among the community that this place is no longer safe,” said Chen Bass, 27, an Orthodox Jew and mother of two. Mr. Luftag called the moment “the beginning of a new era” and said Jews were not safe in England.
Like other metropolitan centers in Britain, Manchester has absorbed waves of immigration over the centuries. Manchester, one of England’s biggest metropolitan areas, is home to the largest Jewish community in the country outside London, numbering around 30,000 people. They live in the city alongside an even larger population that identifies as Muslim, which makes up one-fifth of the city’s 550,000 citizens. When Uganda, a former British protectorate, expelled Asian residents in 1972, Britain decided it had a responsibility to welcome them. And the diversity of the city’s population has drawn people from many more countries to make their homes there.

The Times reported how 22 doctors have been subject to discipline or restrictions overseas but there is no record of that on their General Medical Council (GMC) licences in the UK. Cases include doctors suspended abroad over their care of patients and one medic who lost his medical licence overseas for having sex with a patient. In other cases, the GMC was aware of an overseas sanction but still decided the person could work in the UK. Of these, 25 doctors do not currently have a licence to practise in the UK, though they may have worked in the UK previously. “We also always actively seek information from overseas regulators when doctors who have been working in other countries apply to register with us.

The statement "confirms that foreign exchange market interventions are an important monetary policy instrument for the SNB in ensuring appropriate monetary conditions and thus meeting its statutory mandate with respect to price stability. "While that could be read as giving the SNB some wiggle room in its choice of currency intervention pair, it also underlines the sensitivity of the currency for Washington in trade talks. And most analysts assume one of the main goals of Donald Trump's broader trade policy is to weaken what the administration sees as a grossly overvalued dollar. And that may well have ripple effects across world markets. The opinions expressed here are those of the author, a columnist for Reuters

Justin Baldoni is being sued by The New York Times for legal fees after his defamation suit over its Blake Lively story was dismissed. In the latest legal round linked to the hit 2024 romantic drama It Ends with Us, the newspaper is seeking $150,000 (£111,000) in legal fees it spent on the suit Baldoni filed, which was dismissed by a federal judge in June. The New York Times named Baldoni's production company Wayfarer Productions in legal documents submitted to New York's Supreme Court on Tuesday, The Wrap reports. The story was titled We Can Bury Anyone: Inside a Hollywood Smear Machine and was published in December 2024. Lively claimed Baldoni had sexually harassed her while making It Ends with Us, which was a surprise hit when it opened in cinemas in August 2024.
The newspaper on Tuesday filed legal papers naming Baldoni‘s production company Wayfarer Productions after a defamation suit he filed against them was dismissed from court by a federal judge this past June. Daily Mail has reached out to Baldoni's legal team for comment on the story. The New York Times has sought $150,000 from Justin Baldoni, 41, in legal fees it spent on a suit he filed that was later dropped. In December, Lively named Baldoni in a lawsuit accusing him of sexual harassment, retaliatory conduct, and intentional infliction of emotional stress. In the suit, Baldoni named Lively, her spouse Ryan Reynolds and her publicist Leslie Sloane, citing the aforementioned report in legal documents.
Mr. Zahid and his co-defendants were investigated by a child sexual exploitation investigations unit within the Greater Manchester Police that was formed in 2021, the police said in a statement. The force said it was one of two major investigations that have so far resulted in 32 offenders being jailed for a combined total of 474 years for grooming gang activity in Rochdale. In January, the grooming gangs issue returned to international headlines after Elon Musk, the billionaire tech mogul, used his social media platform to post a series of vitriolic posts about it that included many inaccuracies and smears. In response to growing public pressure, the government announced a full national inquiry into the issue in June. “The men abused, degraded and then discarded the victims when they were just children,” he said.
LOCAL residents can step back in time by visiting the new exhibition at Limavady Workhouse, with the opportunity to explore living heritage, poignant tales and glimpse the fascinating past of the iconic building. Offering visitors an opportunity to discover one of the best-preserved workhouses in Northern Ireland, the exhibition is generously funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund Northern Ireland and National Lottery players. Karen Heaney from Limavady Community Development Initiative explained why the story of the Workhouse is such a powerful channel for local people to connect with their past history. The exhibition features a previously unseen collection of archived objects, costumes and artefacts, specially curated to bring the history of the workhouse to life.
