PESHAWAR – Anti-Terrorism Court in Kohat district has sentenced a Tehreek Taliban Pakistan militant to 25 years in prison and also fined him Rs1 million. The convict, Azizullah, had kidnapped 16 labourers who were working on a Jazz tower in Kurram district in June last year. Later, 10 kidnapped men managed their release and escaped from captivity while the other six remained in the clutches of the TTP men. Azizullah was arrested during a raid in August last year and later the CTD recovered Rs6.7 million of the ransom amount from him. Recently, the court awarded him 25 years imprisonment and Rs1 million fine.

KARACHI: The dollar rate has reached an all-time high against the Pakistani rupee and is presently trading at Rs225 in the interbank market, as reported by Mettis Link News. According to details, the greenback spiked sharply by Rs3.01 in the interbank market to settle at Rs225. The USD is trading at Rs226-227 in the open bank market. Analysts attributed the decline to the lack of economic guidance amid the political uncertainty prevailing in the country and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) not intervening. According to the SBP, the rupee closed at Rs224.92 against the dollar, down Rs2.93 or 1.3 per cent, from yesterday’s close of Rs221.99.

ISLAMABAD – Shattering all previous records, the rupee fell to an all-time low against the dollar for the second day in a row on Tuesday, closing at Rs222 in the interbank market. Mettis Global Director Saad Bin Naseer said the rupee was seeing a decline due to “panic buying [of the dollar] by banks in the interbank market”. “The dollar is getting stronger in the global market against al­most all the world currencies. Exchange Companies Associ­ation of Pakistan General sec­retary Zafar Paracha, however, disagreed with Naseer and said there was “no demand” for dol­lars in the open and interbank market. On Monday, the dollar had re­ported a record single-day ap­preciation in the interbank market to reach Rs215.20 from Rs210.95.

Lahore – Pakistan has reported no death in the last 24 hours by novel coronavirus as the number of positive cases has risen to 1,547,203. The nationwide tally of fatalities stands at 30,445 on Tuesday. According to the latest figures by the National Institute of Health (NIH), at least 459 persons were tested positive for COVID-19 across the country in the past 24 hours. Pakistan has conducted 16,419 tests in the past 24 hours out of which 459 persons were tested positive for the disease. The COVID Positivity Ratio was recorded at 2.80 percent.

LAHORE – In Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, an Indian army captain and a Junior Commissioned Officer were killed and four other army personnel injured in a grenade blast in Poonch district. The accidental grenade blast occurred when the army personnel were on duty along the Line of Control in Mendhar area of Poonch on Sunday night.
