Unemployment has risen again. Latest figures from Stats NZ show the unemployment rate has reached 4.8% in the September quarter. That's up from 4.6% in the June quarter, and well up from 3.2% in the December 2021 quarter. NZ Herald Business Editor Liam Dann told Kerre Woodham that there was no question they would see people lose their jobs, but the fact that it came in lower than many forecasts is a good thing. He says that over the last 20 or 30 years, New Zealand has historically had an unemployment rate above 5%, so we are still below the historical average.

From Giles Dexter at Radio New Zealand:The government intends to introduce the Treaty Principles Bill this Thursday – earlier than expected. At present, the progressing of the Bill is having serious impacts on the relationship but the Bill if enacted would kill that relationship. When Roigard came on, there was an instant and recognisable difference; he managed length, accuracy and contestability. This is written before the All Blacks choose their 23 for Ireland on Saturday morning, but Roigard looms as an almost certain change; there’s an argument to say he should have started against England. Were this any other game than Ireland, I wonder too if some thought would have been given to resting Ardie Savea. If the All Blacks have lost their “aura”, Ireland haven’t yet found their way past the quarter-finals of rugby’s most important tournament. Foodstuffs store detective Lynley Gray said CCTV footage showed Knapp leaving the supermarket on both occasions without paying for the items. Ms Surrey initially asked for Knapp to be discharged without conviction on the grounds that convictions could jeopardise her ability to find employment. Judge Williams proceeded with sentencing after Ms Surrey said Knapp had changed her mind about applying for a discharge.
