The part of the proposal that has drawn most attention is the plan to shut down the 1News website and put news (presumably video only) on its streaming platform, TVNZ+. One of the reasons a ‘video only’ approach feels flawed is the problem it will present in covering breaking news. It is a relatively slow process and news consumers will have already headed to Stuff, the Herald or RNZ. Outsourcing 1 NewsClosing the 1News website is clearly not going to save TVNZ the sort of money it needs to trim from its news division. RNZ has more in-house TV and broadcasting capability than Stuff did when it took over the news reins at TV3.

I’d sit through ‘Genie in a Bottle’, ‘Man I Feel Like a Woman’ and ‘Boom Boom Boom Boom’ with my finger poised on the record button, waiting for number one. )’ by Lou Bega would always come in at the top spot with that big farting trumpet and that impossibly thin moustache. It happened when Bob the Builder sang “a little bit of timber and a saw, a little bit of fixing, that’s for sure” on his first album(?). It happened when Lou Bega played 90s nostalgia festival So Pop and lipsynched his way through his 4pm set. Even as a fan of both Lou Bega and Cruskits, I never expected to see the two combine forces.

The way has been cleared for an Australian diplomat's partner to face charges over a post-Bledisloe Cup street fight after Australia removed his immunity from prosecution. Diplomatic immunity is a right commonly afforded to overseas-based representatives giving them freedom to conduct diplomatic business without being arrested or detained. Given the seriousness of the incident, NZ Police initiated a request to have immunity stripped from the man so he could be charged. "Once the police arrived they barged him into a wall and he started screaming over and over 'I've got diplomatic immunity'." Prime Minister Chris Luxon sidestepped whether he supported the man facing charges, and Foreign Minister Winston Peters has declined to comment throughout.

Artist Josh Drummond who painted the Christopher Luxon portrait was raising funds for Kiwipal and Rainbow Youth. Journalist David Farrier first reported on the Luxon artwork last week on his website Webworm.
