Three races, three gold medals and three Olympic records at these Paris Games for Leon Marchand, who demonstrated his superhuman ability once again by becoming the first man in history to complete the butterfly-breastroke double. Two gold medals in less than two hours. US media had already dubbed Marchand ‘The French Michael Phelps’ owing to the fact the Toulouse native is coached by Bob Bowman, the mastermind behind the legendary American’s career. Phelps accumulated 28 medals in five Olympics, but he never attempted a double whammy in a night session. This one-two was all in a day’s work for Marchand, who became the first swimmer to win two golds in one night at the Olympics since 1976.

Benefield, 32, was originally charged with second-degree murder with a firearm after fatally shooting Douglas Benefield, her 58-year-old estranged husband, in September 2020. Prosecutors argued that Benefield shot her husband as a means to get sole custody of their child, while defense lawyers said the shooting was self-defense as he menaced her. The once-intense romance curdled, and prosecutors allege Benefield attempted to resolve her failed efforts to win sole custody of their child by killing Douglas. AdvertisementThe deadly shooting unfolded at the Florida home where Benefield was living with her mother in September 2020. The argument began in the evening, after Douglas came to the home while Benefield was packing their shared moving truck.

Air New Zealand says it will immediately remove its 2030 science based carbon intensity reduction target, and withdraw from the SBTi. SBTi worked out the world's first net zero standard, with a science based target of limiting global warming from the pre-industrial era to 1.5 degrees centigrade. It makes you wonder if the airline will reach its 2050 net zero carbon emissions target by 2050 that it's committed to, as chair Therese Walsh said. Looking at the above, maybe it was the honest thing for Air NZ to do, to drop out of the SBTi. Also, who knows what destinations there will be left to fly to in 25 years time, even if the world reaches the net zero target?
