A Director General of the National Industrial Training Authority (Nita), Stephen Ogenga, has been charged with corruptly conferring a benefit of Sh4.8 million for the supply and maintenance of sewing machines. James Waweru and Sheila Wambui Nyakinyua, both directors of Xponics Limited, were separately charged with corruptly obtaining Sh10.1 million from Nita by falsifying a tender for the supply and maintenance of sewing machines. Waweru and Wambui have denied corruptly obtaining Sh10,189,064 from Nita by submitting a falsified bid to secure an unfair advantage in the tender. The three were charged with defrauding Nita by submitting a false tender for the supply and maintenance of sewing machines. The prosecution did not oppose their release on bail but urged the court to consider that the amount involved was public money.

Police in Elgeyo Marakwet are investigating an incident in which an officer shot and killed two forest rangers on Sunday night. The officer identified as Evans Kimtai shot dead the two forest rangers before turning the gun on himself. According to the police, the officer from the border patrol unit in Turkana shot dead the two at the Cheranganyi Forest Station. Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge said the attacker had allegedly befriended one of the forest rangers and the two recently differed. According to the police, the assailant's girlfriend was not at the forest station but he targeted her friends killing the two.

A woman was left seething after being charged more than $6 for a can of Coke at a popular beachside restaurant. Francesca was left stunned by the cost after visiting the takeaway kiosk at Promenade Bondi Beach, in Sydney's eastern suburbs, with a friend on May 26. A Promenade Bondi Beach spokesman quickly clarified the matter, saying Francesca had been charged the wrong price and was provided with a refund. A 250ml can of Coke Zero sold at the kiosk costs customers $4. According to the Promenade Bondi Beach website, non-alcoholic drinks at the dining bar and the beach bar costs diners between $8 to $15.

The penetration rate for feature phones and smartphones stood at 62.9 per cent and 66.4 per cent, respectively, meaning feature phones still serve a huge number of Kenyans, who have since been pushed out of internet access.

Known as Rapid-RO, the AI tool has been found to successfully rule out heart attacks in over a third of patients across four UK hospitals during trials. Professor James Leiper, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation (BHF), which funded the study, said: “This research demonstrates the important role AI could play in guiding treatment decision for heart patients. Rapid-RO was able to successfully rule out heart attacks in 36% of patients, compared to 27% ruled out by troponin blood testing alone. It was also found to be more accurate at identifying heart attack cases. Troponin tests missed four times as many heart attacks (108 cases) compared to the AI tool (27 cases), the researchers said.

Joanna Rowland-Stuart was aided by a British Sign Language interpreter at Lewes Crown Court on Monday but was unable to follow the hearing after the battery died in her cochlear implant. The defendant, appearing via video link from HMP Lewes, did not enter a plea over the death of her husband Andrew Rowland-Stuart. KUALA LUMPUR: The law prohibiting the sale and purchase of tobacco products, smoking items or tobacco substitutes to those under 18 years old will come into force this year. It comes under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852), which Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said will be enforced starting this year. Under the Act, which was gazetted on Feb 2, the provision of any services related to smoking to minors under 18 will also be banned. The minister said this is following the revisions to the International Health Regulations (IHR), which require World Health Organisation (WHO) members to create a national IHR authority. Dzulkefly said 194 member states of the WHO agreed to the amendments at the 77th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Environment Court has extended orders issued in April stopping a plan by the Kenyan government to construct a road through the Aberdare National Park and Forest Reserve. The Kenya National Highways Authority (Kenha), Kenya Water Towers Agency, Norken International Limited and the National Environment Management Authority have been listed as respondents. If the project is allowed, the petitioners argue, it will have harmful and irreversible environmental, economic, and cultural impacts on the Aberdare ecosystem. The Law Society of Kenya, National Museums of Kenya, Kenya Wildlife Service and Kenya Forest Service are named as interested parties. The lobby groups moved to court to block the planned construction of the controversial 52km Mau-Mau Road, which cuts through the Aberdare National Park and Forest Reserve.
