A survivor of the former Sean Ross Abbey mother and baby home has written to the children's minister demanding urgent action following the recent landmark High Court ruling in favour of two survivors of mother and baby homes. Marie Thornton and John Duncan Morris took their cases to the High Court which ruled that the minister should have considered the two institutions to the redress scheme. Campaigners now await the minister’s decision on whether she will appeal the judgment or accept that elements of the redress scheme need consideration. She is also reiterating her calls for an investigation and possible excavation of the Angels’ Plot burial ground at Sean Ross Abbey in Roscrea. The Angel's Plot at Sean Ross Abbey.

In a statement, USA Rugby said: 'The Open Division will permit any athlete, regardless of gender assigned at birth and gender identity, to compete in USA Rugby-sanctioned events, whether full contact or non-contact. 'Division status will be determined during the membership application and registration process, when an athlete selects the "gender" option in Rugby Xplorer. 'When applying for membership or registering as "Female" or registering for an event in the Women's Division, an athlete represents and warrants to USA Rugby that they are Female.'

A deportation operation in Dublin has seen at least one family who had lived in Cork for years being returned to South Africa. And multiple people were picked up from this hotel as part of the deportation order. It is believed that many of those facing deportation may have been arrested earlier in February, when 38 asylum seekers were arrested in a planned deportation operation in Dublin. One operation removed 23 EU citizens on grounds of criminality. “A deportation order is a legal order to leave the State,” the Department said in a statement.

Science teachers are deeply invested in evidence-based research. Far from opposing reform, they had been begging for the science curriculum to be updated, but they want reform to be safe and fair. Photograph: istock/GettyThere are two enormous, glaring problems with the research recently published by the Irish Science Teachers Association (ISTA) about the new additional assessment components (AACs) in Leaving Cert science subjects. Watts, currently professor of education at Brunel University, London, has had a distinguished career deeply rooted in science education, curriculum development, and the professional accreditation of teachers. He is no stranger to Ireland, having worked closely with University College Cork for over 10 years as external examiner for the Bachelor of Science Education and Postgraduate Diploma in Education.

A dramatic last-gasp leveller by Reo Hatate earned Celtic a 2-2 comeback draw against Rangers at Ibrox but Premiership leaders Hearts emerged the winners on the day. The visitors stormed back after the break and left-back Kieran Tierney reduced the deficit in the 56th minute. Rangers were hanging on desperately until VAR intervened – with a couple of minutes remaining – and a penalty was awarded to the Hoops for a Dujon Sterling handball. Jack Butland saved Hatate’s spot-kick and his effort from the rebound, but the Hoops substitute scored at the third attempt. With nine fixtures remaining, Danny Rohl’s side are six points behind leaders Hearts and two ahead of Celtic who have a game in hand over the top two.

The death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei after almost 37 years in power raises paramount questions about the country’s future. As outlined in its constitution, Iran on Sunday formed a council to assume leadership duties and govern the country. A father-to-son transfer in the case of a supreme leader could spark anger, not only among Iranians already critical of clerical rule, but also among supporters of the system. There has been only one other transfer of power in the office of supreme leader of Iran, the paramount decision-maker since the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. The supreme leader is at the heart of Iran’s complex power-sharing Shiite theocracy and has final say over all matters of state.
