Premier League: Everton 2 Burnley 0Everton won at home for the first time in three months to keep themselves in the hunt for European football with a 2-0 victory over struggling Burnley. The win over the Clarets by no means guarantees their travails at Hill Dickinson Stadium are over with Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City still to visit but it avoided the unpalatable prospect of failing to profit against the Premier League's second-bottom side. Improving their home form - this was only their fifth league win here - will strengthen their case, as will Tarkowski contributing more from set-pieces. Just past the half-hour the centre-back planted a header from James Garner's deep free-kick to score from Everton's first shot on target. Another Garner set-piece, this time swinging into the near post, was headed on by Jarrad Branthwaite but was kept out by Dubravka.

A life buoy was used to strike a man over the head in the course of a city centre assault and now the 51-year-old man who carried out the crime has been sentenced to 18 months in jail. Garda Stephen O’Sullivan said that at approximately 6pm on October 15 last year, gardaí responded to a report of an incident at Lower Oliver Plunkett Street, Cork City, in relation to an assault. “At the scene, gardaí observed a man bleeding from the head and face and he was lying on the ground in a semi-conscious state. "Gordon Sheerin then drags the male across the road at Lower Oliver Plunket Street,” Garda O’Sullivan said. "He wishes to apologise to the victim even though the victim has chosen not to engage with the process,” Ms Audley said at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.

Premier League: Leeds United 0 Sunderland 1Habib Diarra’s second-half penalty snatched Sunderland a 1-0 win at Elland Road and dealt Leeds’ Premier League survival fight a blow. The Senegal midfielder converted from the spot in the 70th minute as the Black Cats clinched their first win in five league matches and their third on the road this season. Leeds missed the chance to put clear daylight between themselves and the bottom three on another frustrating night for their fans, slipping to back-to-back home league defeats after Saturday’s loss to Manchester City. Daniel Farke’s side remain six points above the bottom three, with relegation rivals West Ham and Nottingham Forest both in action on Wednesday, while Sunderland leapfrogged Brighton into 11th place.

A grandmother who died from rabies four months after being scratched by a stray puppy in Morocco was only diagnosed when doctors thought she was suffering a mental health crisis, an inquest has heard. I was concerned the diagnosis might be rabies in the context of having a stray dog bite three months ago. The inquest heard that Mrs Ford also visited her GP with headaches and a complaint of reaction to an insect bite in March and April of last year. Dog licensing, euthanasia of stray dog and quarantining were credited with killing off the virus. Popular tourist destinations such as Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and Turkey all carry a high risk of dogs transmitting rabies to people.

Between 1,500 and 2,000 Irish people stranded in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar due to related flight cancellations have registered with the Department of Foreign Affairs as they seek a route home. Accurate statistics are hard to find because so much white-collar crime goes undetected, unreported and unprosecuted, but an often-cited statistic is that white-collar crime costs the Irish economy at least €2 billion a year. Six years ago, the Government published a suite of corporate governance and law enforcement measures called the ‘White-collar crime’ Package. One of the women who fought for that vote was born in the same town where my grandmother cast hers. I had been following Irish Examiner columnist Clodagh Finn on Twitter, where she shared fascinating insights about Irish women whose achievements and stories were remarkable. Irish women are grateful to our first female civil servant Thekla Beere, whose work resulted in the lifting of the marriage bar. We were not just telling the stories of the 23 women, but our own stories too. Among the laughter, some personal accounts shared in the green room were so reflective of Irish society for women, that silence fell and hearts broke.
