Residents from various parts of the city raised concerns over sewage inflow into lakes, foul odour and mosquito menace during a phone-in programme conducted by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) on Saturday. The programme was held from 12 noon to 1 p.m., during which HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Attapur residents reported encroachment of 33 guntas of government land and 900 square yards earmarked as park space, urging authorities to prevent further construction. The HYDRAA through a statement on Wednesday, also informed about the sealing of two five-storeyed buildings under construction on land earmarked for public utilities in Venkateshwara Colony, Neknampur village. Four plots measuring about 300 square yards each were originally earmarked for public utility use in the HMDA-approved layout.

RAIPUR: In a breakthrough for the ‘peace and development’ initiative in tribal-dominated Bastar, 51 Maoist cadres, including 24 women, laid down their arms on Saturday. Inspired by the relief and rehabilitation policy of the government, the cadres renounced violence to join the mainstream. The cadres surrendered in the South Bastar region, involving 21 Red rebels from the Sukma district and 30 from the Bijapur district. The group also surrendered a cache of sophisticated weaponry, including AK-47 rifles, SLR rifles, INSAS rifles, and BGL (Barrel Grenade Launcher) launchers. The surrender of 24 women cadres is seen as a blow to the internal structure of the banned CPI (Maoist) organisation, indicating a shifting tide in the ideological hold of the insurgency over local populations.
