VIJAYAWADA: Guntur district police on Saturday arrested a four-member ganja smuggling gang, including a minor, and seized four kilograms of cannabis from their possession on Saturday. South Zone Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Banodaya said the accused procured ganja from Odisha and Vizag and supplied it to Machilipatnam, Bapatla, Chirala and other areas. Banodaya said the Guntur district police are intensifying their fight against narcotics under the ‘Sankalpam’ programme. As part of the initiative, police are conducting special drives across the district to curb the transportation, sale and consumption of ganja. He warned that strict action will be taken against those involved in drug trafficking and urged the public to cooperate by providing information on illegal activities.

VIJAYAWADA: Thirty-nine passengers escaped unhurt after a private travel bus caught fire on the National Highway near Keesara village in Kanchikacherla mandal of NTR district on Saturday morning. The bus was travelling from Hyderabad to Vijayawada when flames suddenly broke out from the rear portion of the vehicle. Noticing smoke and fire, the driver acted swiftly and brought the bus to a halt on the roadside and evacuated all passengers. Within minutes, the fire spread rapidly and engulfed the entire bus, reducing it to ashes. It caused traffic on the national highway.

The Union Ministry of Textiles said on Saturday that the agreement between India and the U.S. opens up a $118 billion U.S. global imports market of textiles, apparels, and made ups. With the U.S. being India’s largest export destination of around $10.5 billion, the deal is expected to play a pivotal role in India achieving its intended target of $100 billion exports in 2030. The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry chairman Ashwin Chandran said India’s textile and apparel exports can once again compete effectively in the U.S. The U.S. imports of textiles and apparel from India dropped 31.4% in November 2025 compared to November 2024. The industry is awaiting more clarity on cotton as India’s exports of textiles and apparel are primarily driven by cotton.

What ought to be attempted instead is the democratisation of the bhadralok’s ideals: reform, intellectual fervour, liberalism, nationalism without shrillness, reason and modernity.
