The International Crisis Group’s decision to flag Eritrea–Ethiopia as a “conflict to watch” exposes precisely this failure. Equally absent from the Crisis Group’s framing is a serious examination of Ethiopia’s internal condition. The problem with the Crisis Group’s approach is not caution but false equivalence. The Crisis Group’s warning would be more credible, and far more useful, if it reflected this reality rather than obscuring it. ConclusionWhat ultimately discredits the Crisis Group’s framing is not caution but corruption of purpose.

The Gambia opened its first trial Thursday against a member of the country's notorious "Junglers" paramilitary unit, which acted as a death squad under the reign of ex-dictator Yahya Jammeh. Sanna Manjang, who was the head of the squad, pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder at the country's High Court in Banjul. In December, Manjang was also charged with two other killings, including the shooting of longtime AFP journalist Deyda Hydara. The Junglers worked independently of The Gambia's regular army, and the death squad has long been accused of extrajudicial killings and torture by the United Nations and rights groups. Several of Jammeh's accomplices, including Junglers, have been detained and sentenced abroad in Germany, Switzerland and the United States.

The U.S. is imposing a new round of sanctions on Thursday "against the architects of the Iranian regime’s brutal crackdown on peaceful demonstrators," according to the Treasury Department. Ali Larijani, the Secretary of the Supreme Council for National Security, is among the Iranian security officials being sanctioned. The U.S. accuses him of being one of the first officials to call for violence against Iranian protesters. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that a “credible source” told him killings tied to Iran’s ongoing crackdown on protesters have stopped. In February, President Donald Trump reimposed a “maximum pressure” campaign on Iran in an effort to block its development of nuclear weapons.

An update on last fall's deadly UPS jet crash has raised questions over past warnings and renewed focus on Boeing's rocky record of safety in recent years. This deadly crash could be another black eye for Boeing, following the mid-flight door plug blowout of an Alaska Airlines flight in early 2024 and the deadly crashes of Boeing aircraft operated by Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines last decade. Adjekum said Boeing has a responsibility to ensure the continuous safety and reliability of its products, including the MD-11s. But he said Boeing and UPS shared responsibility for safety in this case. And Boeing claims to have improved safety reporting systems and conducted mandatory product safety and quality training for all employees.

But on Monday, Somalia's federal government announced the cancellation of all port management and security cooperation agreements with the UAE, accusing it of undermining the country's sovereignty. Omar Mahmoud, a senior researcher at the International Crisis Group think-tank, tells the BBC that Israel's recognition of Somaliland formed the backdrop to the decision. "Using Somalia's airspace, Somalia's airfields to smuggle a fugitive is not something that Somalia condones," Ali Omar, Somalia's state minister for foreign affairs, told Al Jazeera. "Mogadishu controls the country's airspace and can use that, alongside diplomatic pressure, to push both the UAE and the regional administrations. Mahmoud does not see relations between Somalia and the UAE improving in the foreseeable future, as "trust has been lost".

Airbus believes the A350 could still find a place in the Brazilian market, despite being dropped by the country’s two largest long-haul operators in recent years. According to Sternchuss, growth in international passenger traffic is expected to change the economics of long-haul flying in Brazil over the medium to long term. Follow us: WhatsApp | BlueSky | Google News | Instagram | LinkedIn | FacebookThe executive’s view contrasts with the A350’s recent track record in Brazil. In this context, the manufacturer sees room for higher-capacity aircraft on trunk long-haul routes, particularly as networks stabilize and frequencies increase. In Brazil, recent widebody fleet decisions have been driven primarily by route profiles, financial risk and network structure rather than headline fuel efficiency metrics.

Ugandan opposition candidate Bobi Wine slammed an internet shutdown in the country as he cast his ballot on Thursday in the country's presidential election. Uganda's internet was shut down Tuesday by the government communications agency, which cited misinformation, electoral fraud and incitement of violence. President Yoweri Museveni, 81, faces seven other candidates, including Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, who is calling for political change. Wine alleged there was electoral fraud occurring, noting that biometric voter identification machines were not working at polling places.
