Ethiopian police have seized more than 50,000 rounds of ammunition sent by Eritrea to arm rebels in the country amid increasingly tense relations between the two Horn of Africa nations. In October, Ethiopia accused its neighbour of attempting to destabilise the country by financing armed groups, particularly in the Amhara region. The ammunition, transported in a lorry, was sent by Eritrea and transited through the northern region of Tigray with the assistance of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), police said. Abiy initially sought rapprochement with Eritrea when he came to power, earning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019. The two governments cooperated against the Tigrayans during the 2020-2022 war, but fell out over the peace accord, from which Eritrea was excluded.

By Dan CatchpoleJan 14 (Reuters) - Boeing has reached tentative ‌settlements with a Canadian man who ‌lost six relatives in the 2019 crash of an Ethiopian Air 737 MAX jet shortly after takeoff. Boeing settled lawsuits concerning their deaths in 2025. Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed five months after Lion Air Flight 610, another 737 MAX, crashed into the Java Sea. The two accidents led to a 20-month grounding of the company's best-selling jet and cost Boeing more than $20 billion. “We are deeply sorry to all who lost loved ones on Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302," a Boeing spokesperson said in a statement on Wednesday.

Just as a trial was set to begin this week in Chicago, Boeing agreed to a settlement with a Canadian man who lost six family members in a 737 Max 8 plane crash in Ethiopia in 2019. Manant Vaidya, of Toronto, lost his parents and sister, along with three in-laws in the crash. The Ethiopian Airlines crash happened less than five months after another 737 Max 8 jet crashed, when a Lion Air flight plunged into the sea off Indonesia in 2018. After those incidents, Boeing was forced to ground all of its 737 Max planes for nearly two years to install required system upgrades. The deal allowed Boeing to avoid criminal prosecution for allegedly misleading U.S. regulators about the 737 Max jetliner before the two crashes.

Egypt has broadened its military mission in Somalia after Israel's recognition of the breakaway region of Somaliland, with the protection of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's government now a top objective, sources have told The National. Somalia has strongly condemned Israel's recognition of Somaliland – the first by any country since the region broke away from Somalia in 1991 – arguing that it constituted a breach of its sovereignty. "The implementation on the ground of the joint defence agreement between Egypt and Somalia has expanded and deepened since Israel's recognition of Somaliland," said one of the sources. "Egypt does not want Somalia to fall prey to Israel, Ethiopia or any other foreign power," said the source. "Israel's recognition of Somaliland is part of its old-school doctrine of courting minorities and non-Arabs in the region," he said.
