JUBA, South Sudan (AP) — The United Nations Mission in South Sudan said Monday that it would not comply with a government order to shut down its base in Akobo, an opposition stronghold near the Ethiopian border where tens of thousands of refugees have fled. On Friday, the South Sudanese army ordered U.N. peacekeepers as well as humanitarian organizations and civilians to vacate the town ahead of a planned assault. “Any military operations in and around Akobo gravely endanger the safety and security of civilians,” said mission chief Anita Kiki Gbeho. The South Sudanese government has been fighting opposition forces since a 2018 peace deal broke down about a year ago. A dramatic escalation took place in December 2025, when opposition forces seized several government outposts in northern Jonglei.

Uganda Airlines is wet-leasing Boeing 787 aircraft from Ethiopian Airlines to restore long-haul routes after its two Airbus A330-800s had to undergo unscheduled maintenance. Chief executive Jenifer Bamuturaki has been succeeded by acting head Girma Wake – a former chief of Ethiopian Airlines. But the carrier, around the same time, had to take its two long-haul jets “temporarily out of service” for “unscheduled maintenance”. The airline has turned to Wake’s former employer to address the lack of capacity, wet-leasing an Ethiopian 787 from 7 March. “This short-term arrangement ensures operational continuity on the airline’s long-haul routes while enhancing network reliability and service delivery for our valued passengers,” says Uganda Airlines.

Bar Panisse is the new little sister to Berkeley’s legendary Chez Panisse. As one former Cesar patron told local-news site Berkeleyside, “We’re still grieving and miss it constantly.”There is no sign of grief inside, however, where throngs of people enjoy cocktails, Dungeness crab and plates of herby butter beans. The vibe: Bars are usually about drinking and nightlife; as you can tell from its crowded dining tables and serious eaters, people are treating Bar Panisse more like a restaurant. On many tables was a seasonal Dungeness crab dish with green-garlic butter, and seemingly on every single table were those butter beans with greens (for tonight, Caraflex cabbage). The drinks: Bar Panisse’s beverage menu is designed by Dylan O’Brien of Emeryville’s Prizefighter Bar, an unfussy joint that goes hard on flavors.
