President Sisi and Khan exchanged viewpoints on the latest developments regarding the Palestinian cause and recent incidents in the Gaza Strip. The Pakistani prime minister underscored that Egypt's stability is a milestone in the stability of the Middle East region and the Muslim world at large.

Egypt’s Health Ministry on Wednesday confirmed 1,151 new coronavirus cases, up from 1,140 on Tuesday. It also reported 43 deaths and 876 recovered cases. There have now been a total of 257,725 confirmed cases, 14,850 deaths, and 188,567 recovered cases in the country. The Health Ministry has denied rumors that the mutated strain of the virus found in India has made its way to Egypt, stressing that security at all entry ports is on high alert for possible cases. The ministry reported in mid-May that it has vaccinated 1.3 million people so far.

CAIRO – 27 May 2021: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi headed early on Thursday to Djibouti to hold a summit meeting with counterpart Ismail Omar Guelleh. The visit is the first of its kind as no Egyptian chief of state has ever visited Djibouti. As indicated by Presidency Spokesperson Bassam Rady, talks will be on reinforcing bilateral cooperation, particularly on the economic, security, and military levels. That is in addition to holding consultations and exchanging views over key developments of regional issues of mutual interest. On Wednesday, two Egyptian military jets carrying food and medical aid arrived in Djibouti to support the fellow African state in the face of COVID-19.

Earlier, several media reports mentioned that the Sudanese and Ethiopian armies are engaging in military clash using heavy weapons in Bashenda border area. That is why the Sudanese army sent reinforcements to the southern border area near the Blue Nile, as reported by Al Arabiyah. In February, The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Sudan does not accept any mediation in the ongoing conflict with Ethiopia over borders at this stage. The ministry stipulated that Ethiopia eyes occupying Sudanese lands saying that deploying the army in Al Fashaqa district is final and shall not be revisited. The area spanning over 250 square kilometers has been experiencing deadly clashes, and armed attacks by Ethiopian militias.

Two cars of an empty passenger train at Damietta station overturned after colliding with a single railway locomotive while traveling on the Damietta/ Tanta line. Railways sources reported that the accident did not result in any injuries, as the train was empty. Train accidents have been a common occurrence in Egypt, with some resulting in a large number of deaths and injuries. The latest of which was last month in Toukh, Qalyubia Governorate, when a train derailed killing 23 people and wounding 139 others. The railway renovation is part of a larger ongoing transportation overhaul that includes new high-speed trains, additional metro lines, and road improvement projects.

The cabinet on Wednesday approved a 362 million euro agreement between Egypt and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development for a project to develop Egypt’s railways signed in April. The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors in March approved a US$440 million loan to support Egypt’s initiatives to enhance the safety and service quality of the country’s railways. The Railway Improvement and Safety for Egypt (RISE) total project cost is $681.1 million, including $241.1 million contributed from the Egyptian National Railways (ENR). The ENR network comprises of over 5,000 km of rail tracks and primarily offers passenger services for low-income Egyptians. About 270 million passengers took trains in 2019, up from 228 million in 2015 and 247 million in 2010.

Minister of Health Hala Zayed announced Wednesday that Egypt has received the first batch of raw materials needed to produce the Chinese Sinovac vaccine, sufficient to create around two million vaccines. During a Cabinet meeting Zayed added that 500,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine were also received. Egypt plans to produce around 40 million Sinovac doses in conjunction with the arrival of raw materials during the coming period, she said. And a meeting has taken place with a delegation of Chinese experts and VACSERA to produce the vaccines, with VACSERA set to become the main factory of the Chinese Sinovac company in Africa. The ministry announced in mid-May that 1.3 million people had received at least a first dose of the vaccine.

CAIRO – 26 May 2021: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Egypt reached a staff-level agreement on the second review of Egypt’s economic program supported by the IMF’s $5.2 billion Stand-by Arrangement. This came after an International Monetary Fund (IMF) team led by Celine Allard held a virtual mission from May 4 to 24, 2021 with the Egyptian authorities. The mission held discussions on the 2021 Article IV Consultation with Egypt and the second review of Egypt’s economic program supported by the IMF’s 12-month Stand-by Arrangement. Inflation continued to be subdued with March outturn (4.5 percent) breaching the lower inner bound of the monetary policy consultation clause. “We welcome the CBE’s readiness to act as necessary to support economic recovery amid muted inflation.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi received on Tuesday the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani. Both sides exchanged greetings and praise, with Thani extending an invitation for Sisi to visit Doha. Sisi received the Qatari minister in the presence of his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, the head of Egyptian Intelligence, Abbas Kamel, and the head of the Qatari State Security Service, Abdullah Al-Khulaifi, according to Sisi’s spokesperson Bassem Rady. Delegations from Egypt and Qatar welcomed the re-initiation of relations brought upon by the summit, calling it a step on the path of building confidence between the two countries. Following the reconciliation, Egypt’s Aviation Ministry reopened Egypt’s airspace to Qatari flights on January 12.

This comes as part of the effective cooperation between Ministries of Civil Aviation and Health, so that the workers in tourism and airport sectors receive the vaccine. The Egyptian Airports Company stressed that protecting workers, their families and passengers arriving and departing from Egypt atop state’s priorities, especially in conjunction with the recovery indicators that some Egyptian tourist airports have begun witnessing in in bound tourism movement. On the other hand, EgyptAir also began vaccinating members of flying crew who deal with passengers on a daily basis, as well as members of its airport offices. The number of centers providing the coronavirus vaccine across Egypt has increased to 360, head of the central administration for preventive affairs at Egypt's Ministry of Health Mohamed Abdel Fattah told Egypt Today.

CAIRO - 26 May 2020: The Health Ministry said Tuesday night that 1,140 new coronavirus cases were detected, upping the total number of confirmed cases since the outbreak in the country began to 256,124. In a statement, Spokesman for the Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said 49 patients have died from the virus over the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 14,807. As many as 987 patients were discharged from isolation hospitals after receiving necessary medical care, taking the number of recovered cases to 187,691 so far, the spokesman said.
