Two cars of an empty passenger train at Damietta station overturned after colliding with a single railway locomotive while traveling on the Damietta/ Tanta line. Railways sources reported that the accident did not result in any injuries, as the train was empty. Train accidents have been a common occurrence in Egypt, with some resulting in a large number of deaths and injuries. The latest of which was last month in Toukh, Qalyubia Governorate, when a train derailed killing 23 people and wounding 139 others. The cabinet on Wednesday approved a 362 million euro agreement between Egypt and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development for a project to develop Egypt’s railways signed in April. The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors in March approved a US$440 million loan to support Egypt’s initiatives to enhance the safety and service quality of the country’s railways. The Railway Improvement and Safety for Egypt (RISE) total project cost is $681.1 million, including $241.1 million contributed from the Egyptian National Railways (ENR). The ENR network comprises of over 5,000 km of rail tracks and primarily offers passenger services for low-income Egyptians. About 270 million passengers took trains in 2019, up from 228 million in 2015 and 247 million in 2010.

Minister of Health Hala Zayed announced Wednesday that Egypt has received the first batch of raw materials needed to produce the Chinese Sinovac vaccine, sufficient to create around two million vaccines. During a Cabinet meeting Zayed added that 500,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine were also received. Egypt plans to produce around 40 million Sinovac doses in conjunction with the arrival of raw materials during the coming period, she said. And a meeting has taken place with a delegation of Chinese experts and VACSERA to produce the vaccines, with VACSERA set to become the main factory of the Chinese Sinovac company in Africa. The ministry announced in mid-May that 1.3 million people had received at least a first dose of the vaccine.

CAIRO - 26 May 2020: The Health Ministry said Tuesday night that 1,140 new coronavirus cases were detected, upping the total number of confirmed cases since the outbreak in the country began to 256,124. In a statement, Spokesman for the Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said 49 patients have died from the virus over the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 14,807.
