Since its reopening in May, tickets for the “Kings of the Sun” exhibit in Prague’s National Museum have completely sold out. The exhibition was inaugurated in August 2020 by Egypt’s Khaled al-Anani, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, and Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. Mostafa Waziri, Secretary-General of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, said that the exhibition is witnessing a remarkable turnout from the Czech people, as the number of visitors since its reopening has reached nearly 10,000. He added that this exhibition is the first for Egyptian antiquities in the Czech capital, and is also the largest exhibition of antiquities of the Old Kingdom. The exhibition opened in conjunction with the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the archaeological work of the Czech mission in Abu Sir.

About 17.7 percent of the total population in Egypt 15 years old and above – 18 million people – are smokers according to population estimates for 2020, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) announced Sunday in a report. The percentage of smokers among males is 35.6 percent, compared to 0.3 percent among females, indicating that the issue is primarily a male one. The average annual expenditure on smoking for an Egyptian family of one or more smokers is about LE6,293.5. The highest percentage of smokers among the different educated categories was for those with a literacy certificate at 30.1 percent, followed by those who read and write at 27.5 percent. The lowest percentage of smokers at all was found among those with a university degree or a higher degree at 12.7 percent.

CAIRO – 31 May 2021: Egypt’s COVID-19 treatment protocol has been updated with new effective drugs being added, said Dr. Hossam Hosny, the head for the scientific committee to combat Corona at the Ministry of Health and Population. This comes in accordance with the international protocols in terms of dealing with COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Hosny added that the number of patients infected with Black Fungus disease are still limited, ensuring the availability of drugs curing this rare fungal infection. “Egypt has added a lot of medications specialized in curing Black Fungus as well as dealing with Coronavirus,” he said during a scientific webinar discussing the developments of the epidemiological situation of Coronavirus, as well as the black fungus infections. “The black fungus has existed since ancient times and Corona is an emerging virus and they have no connection to each other, so it is not a requirement that a Corona patient be infected with the black fungus and it is mainly related to immunodeficiency,” said Dr. Hosny.

Egypt’s Health Ministry has allocated specific medical centers to treat black fungus patients, Jihan al-Assal, Vice President of the Scientific Committee to Combat Coronavirus said on Monday. Assal explained that very few cases of black fungus are present in Egypt. Another member of the committee, Ihab Kamal, said that it will add preventative treatment for black fungus treatment to the coronavirus treatment protocol. CAIRO – 31 May 2021: Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala al-Said stated Sunday in the Senate's plenary session that the government targets GDP growth of 5.4 percent in FY2021/2022 given that the pandemic is expected to be contained by mid-2021 as a result of discovering vaccines and making them available. Concerning the relative contributions of both the private sector and the government sector, El-Said explained that it is expected that the private sector will contribute about 68 percent of the total domestic production in FY2021/2022, with the increase in the contribution to agricultural, tourism, real estate, industrial, and constructions with contributions ranging from about 85 percent and 100 percent. El-Said noted that the sectorial distribution of the estimated production for the year of the plan shows that the fast-growing sectors include restaurants, hotels and telecommunications, construction and building, petroleum, the Suez Canal, and health and educational services. Dr. Hala El-Said said that the third section of the budget plan reviews the overall picture of the economic balance on the hypothesis of recovery from the Corona pandemic and its economic repercussions by the end of 2021. El-Said added that the plan targets the implementation of the structural reform program, and continuing to adopt financing packages and incentive policies, rationalizing aspects of public spending, and implementing the national projects plan, in addition to stabilizing economic conditions, improving performance indicators, and growing international institutions' confidence in the Egyptian economy.

Under the directives of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, Egypt sent humanitarian aid to citizens of Gaza. On Monday, the head of General Intelligence Major General Abbas Kamel went to Gaza Strip to hold meetings with the Palestinian factions, accompanied by Palestinian ministers. This is the third aid convoy that the Fund sends to the Gaza Strip within the Egyptian Initiative for the Reconstruction of the Strip. The Gaza factions also fired rockets at Israeli lands in retaliation for the Israeli assaults against Palestinians in Jerusalem.

CAIRO – 31 May 2021: Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala al-Said stated in the Senate's plenary session Sunday that one third of public investments planned for FY2021/2021will be spent in Upper Egypt and border governorates. El-Said indicated that those will be spent on expanding the construction of new cities, rationalizing energy use, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. That is coupled with enlarging the use of clean technology in the context of green economy and environmentally friendly projects, in addition to developing unplanned slums in the governorates, and implementing a program to eliminate all unsafe areas. Public investments in FY2021/2022 are estimated to hit LE1.2 trillion. The plan's main objectives also include reducing the illiteracy rate to about 17.5 percent and increasing the participation of females and youth in the workforce.

CAIRO - 31 May 2020: Director of Egypt's General Intelligence Service (GIS) Abbas Kamel headed on Monday for Gaza Strip to meet with Palestinian factions and powers. The Egyptian intelligence chief was accompanied by a number of ministers from the Palestinian Authority. Egypt’s government announced that it aims to vaccinate 50 percent of its populace by the end of the year. The turnout of citizens registering to receive coronavirus vaccines has seen positive improvement, showing more confidence from citizens in the Ministry of Health, Cabinet Spokesperson Nader Saad told Al Nahar channel. He added that during June, seven million new doses of vaccines will be available, including four million doses from abroad through the COVAX organization and three million manufactured locally in Egypt. CAIRO – 31 May 2021: The Ministry of State for Immigration and Egyptians Abroad Affairs, in cooperation with the Egyptian Stock Exchange (EGX), launched a campaign to educate Egyptians abroad how to invest in the Egyptian stock market and capital market, through its official pages on social networking sites. The ministry clarified in a statement earlier this week that this campaign comes in implementation of the cooperation protocol between the Ministry of Immigration and the Egyptian Stock Exchange, which was signed by Nabila Makram Abdel Shaheed, Minister of State for Immigration and Egyptians Abroad Affairs, and Mohamed Farid, Chairman of the Egyptian Stock Exchange. Nabila Makram said that the awareness campaign that was launched on the ministry's pages aims to implement the protocol to inform Egyptians abroad about investing in the stock exchange, adding that Egyptians abroad will be introduced to the Egyptian capital market and electronic trading and how to start investing. The minister indicated that this would open additional horizons for Egyptian investment abroad, which is investing in the Egyptian capital market to meet their needs. The Minister of Immigration explained that the campaign includes a number of designs, whether infograph or video, to simplify information on how to invest in the Egyptian Stock Exchange, the necessary steps for listing companies on the stock exchange, special tips for investing in the stock market, benefiting from saving and investing in it, and special information about buying shares and the stock index.

CAIRO - 31 May 2021:The Senate has approved a draft law on the economic and social development plan for the FY2021/2022. The upper chamber of parliament gave its final approval on Sunday after over a 4-hour session to debate the bill in the presence of Planning and Economic Development Minister Hala el Saeed. According to a report by the Senate's financial and economic affairs committee on the bill, the coronavirus pandemic took a heavy toll on global economic activities, which might lead global economy to shrink by about 5 to 8 per cent this year, losing around 8 to 12 trillion dollars during 2020 and 2021. Meanwhile, global merchandise trade hit an all-time low at about 9.2- per cent during 2020, the reports says. Moreover, global growth was projected to see a significant decline at 4.4- per cent affected by the severity of the virus-driven economic crisis; however, it was later expected to record a positive growth at 5.2 per cent in 2021 as the pandemic subsides, the reported noted.
