Egypt’s Health Ministry on Wednesday confirmed 951 new coronavirus cases, 42 deaths and 668 recovered cases. There have now been a total of 264,557 confirmed cases, 15,178 deaths, and 193,491 recovered cases reported in the country. A country-wide partial lockdown aimed at curbing cases that has been in place since May 6 ended on Tuesday. The ministry reported in mid-May that it has vaccinated 1.3 million people since its campaign began on January 24, and over five million have registered on the ministry’s website for the jab. Egypt is currently using China’s Sinopharm vaccine and the UK’s AstraOxford vaccine, and it has plans to soon begin locally manufacturing China’s Sinovac vaccine and Russia’s Sputnik-V.

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that 2.5 million citizens have thus far received a vaccine against COVID-19, out of the six million total registered for vaccination. During a Wednesday press conference Madbouly emphasized the state’s keenness to both keep its citizens safe while continuing the wheel of economy. “We aim by the end of the year that 40 percent of the Egyptian people receive coronavirus vaccines,” Madbouly added. The total number of COVID-19-related deaths is now 15,136 nationwide, after the ministry announced 40 deaths. And 711 patients were discharged from quarantine at isolation hospitals, raising Egypt’s total number of fully-recovered cases to 192,823.

Emirati business giant Khalaf al-Habtoor posted a video clip in which he touched on “complications and questions” that prevented him from being allowed to enter the Mohammed Ali Palace in Cairo. In the video, which he posted on his Twitter account, Habtoor said: “In Cairo, we tried today to enter the palace of Mohammed Ali Pasha, but unfortunately we were unable to do so because of the number of questions and complications that prevented our entry. I hope that the existing entry system is modified to make the visitor’s experience comfortable and to leave a good impression. How come they do not allow us to enter? During Middle of 2019, completion of the rehabilitation of Cairo North Power Plant was also realized under same project while full completion of Sidi-Krir and El-Atf is targeted in November 2021. The ceremony was attended by Gaber Dessouki, Chairman of the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company and NOKE Masaki, Ambassador of Japan to Egypt, as well as Carlos Peton, CEO of Mitsubishi Power Europe. Dessouki said that the Rehabilitation and improvement of the existing plants is regarded as a useful means since it often requires less time and is more cost-effective than construction of new power plants. JICA Chief Representative, Omura Yoshifumi highlighted that El-Atf and Sidi Krir projects which were implemented by Mitsubishi Power back in 2009 are still functioning with good condition where they could achieve 17.5 percent power increase and enhanced efficiency through this project.

CAIRO – 2 June 2021: The Board of Directors of the Egyptian Tourism Promotion Board [ETPB] headed by Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Khaled el-Enany convened and discussed mechanisms and proposals for promoting tourism in Egypt during the upcoming period. Ministers from the Palestinian Authority are scheduled to arrive in Cairo next week to coordinate the reconstruction process per directives of President Mahmoud Abbas.
