Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) plan to renew their deposits with the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) that amount to more than $10bn and are due next year, sources close to the matter told Daily News Egypt on Saturday. The sources, who requested anonymity, said that the deposits are short-term and include about $5bn from Saudi Arabia and $5bn from the UAE. They said that an agreement has been reached between the two Gulf countries and Egypt to extend the deposits. The UAE deposits in the CBE total about $10.7bn, divided between $5.7bn long-term and $5bn short-term, while Qatar has deposited about $4bn, Saudi Arabia has deposited about $10.3bn, and Libya has deposited about $900m. A previous Bloomberg report stated that Qatar deposited $1bn in the CBE to finalize these deals.

CAIRO – 15 October 2023: Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported Friday that Human Rights Researcher Patrick Zaki was banned from attending a peace conference held in Brescia after he posted on Facebook describing Israeli Prime Minister as "a serial killer." The same conference had given Zaki, researcher at the University of Bologna and who spent almost two years at Egyptian prisons, a peace award, which is now subject to calls of revocation. The Palestinian Ministry of Health stated Sunday that the numbers of deaths and injuries since October 7 amounted to 2,384 and 10,150, respectively. As for the Israeli side, deaths and injuries exceed 1,000 and 3,000, respectively. In addition, more than 150 have been held hostages by Hamas, which launched an offensive against Israeli settlements on October 7.

Sherif Lokman, Sub Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) for Financial Inclusion, said that Egypt has made significant progress in enhancing financial inclusion, thanks to the cooperation between CBE and various local and international partners. He said that the rate of financial inclusion in Egypt has increased remarkably in the past seven years. This means that the growth rate of financial inclusion from June 2016 to June 2023 was 160.8%. Lokman also said that CBE considers financial education a top priority, as it plays a major role as a regulator and promoter of financial inclusion. He also noted that one of the main objectives of financial inclusion is to enhance the financial literacy of the population.

Obour Land Food Industries reduced the prices of its cheese and dairy products by 13% to 15%.

CAIRO – 14 October 2023: Palestine rejected and condemned, in the strongest terms, Israel’s crimes of transfer and deportation of the Palestinian people in the occupied Gaza Strip, according to a statement issued from the Palestinian embassy in Cairo. “The Palestinian people are undergoing another Nakba, in full view of the international community,” the statement read. Nakba is an Arabic term that means “Catastrophe” and refers to Israeli crimes of destroying the Palestinians’ homes and kicking them out of their homeland permanently in 1948. Palestine also called upon the international community not to participate, support, give cover, or engage in the commission of these ongoing crimes.
