LONDON, ON, May 29, 2024 /CNW/ - Leaders in journalist safety today unveiled a new suite of online resources designed to help better prepare newsrooms, journalists and educators for coverage of trauma, violence and disaster. Trauma Aware Journalism (TAJ): A News Industry Toolkit features a series of free "micro-learning" videos, online resources and study guides on how journalists can best cover people and communities that are suffering, as well as on how to protect the mental health of news professionals. The project is produced by the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, CBC/Radio-Canada, and the Canadian Journalism Forum on Violence and Trauma. Jane Hawkes, co-founder and executive producer of the Canadian Journalism Forum on Violence and Trauma said the TAJ project aims to fill a long-standing gap in training and education. Dr. Meaghan Labine says she lent Monica Kehar over $160,000 after Kehar told Labine she had breast cancer and needed help. Kehar told her the money was coming and even sent her an email proving she had a job offer from an established doctor, Labine said. But when Labine ran into that doctor at a meeting for the College of Family Physicians of Canada, the doctor had never heard of Monica Kehar. She was eventually expelled from residency and censured by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba, which did its own investigation.
