Singh was arrested four and a half months after Hardeep Singh Nijjar — a prominent Sikh-Canadian activist, president of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, B.C. Gurpatwant Singh Pannun is a dual Canadian-American citizen who has been organizing non-binding referendums for Sikhs to vote for the creation of an independent homeland named Khalistan.
