Five leading candidates will square off Tuesday in the latest debate of Toronto’s campaign. The event, hosted by CBC, is taking place at a critical point of the election, with advance voting for the June 26 contest set to begin on Thursday. Josh Matlow, Mitzie Hunter, Mark Saunders, Olivia Chow, and Ana Bailão are the candidates taking part. Brad Bradford had also been scheduled to attend, but on Monday he and his wife announced the birth of their second child. The debate begins at 11:30 a.m., and will stream live on cbc.ca/toronto, CBC Gem, CBC Listen, on CBC News YouTube and from CBC Toronto’s Facebook account.

Donnie Creek fire now 2nd largest ever recorded in province, total area burned in B.C. Much of the area burned so far has come about as a result of the Donnie Creek blaze, 158 kilometres north of Fort St. John in northeastern B.C. It's also not as large as the 2018 Tweedsmuir complex of fires, nor the 2017 Hanceville Riske Creek complex, which burned 3,015 and 2,412 square kilometres, respectively. The Donnie Creek wildfire is now the second largest recorded in B.C. First, because obviously all of the other candidates have determined that their hopes rest entirely on attacking Chow, and attacking her on this specific point about potential tax increases. Now it seems just as likely Chow cruises to victory without the levels of support ever really changing. And that leads to my third observation about that moment, and the state of the campaign so far: Olivia Chow has succeeded thus far, to a certain extent, by avoiding being pinned down to specifics. The point here is that so far, a growing plurality of people seem to be ready to vote for Chow based on liking and trusting her. Asking the same question over and over and expecting a different response just seems, past a certain point, silly.

LONDON, Ont. - Members of the Muslim community in London, Ont., are to host a vigil today to mark the second anniversary of the worst mass killing in the city’s history. Salman Afzaal, his wife Madiha Salman, their 15-year-old daughter Yumna and her 74-year-old grandmother, Talat Afzaal, were run down by a pickup truck on June 6, 2021. Prosecutors allege the attack was an act of terrorism targeting London’s Muslim community. Mayor Josh Morgan, Canada’s special representative on combating Islamophobia Amira Elghawaby, and members of the Afzaal family are among those expected to speak at the vigil.

The hour-and-a-half event hosted by the CBC came as advance voting is set to begin Thursday and run until June 13, ahead of mayoral byelection day on June 26. Taking part in Tuesday’s debate were former NDP parliamentarian Olivia Chow, city councillor Josh Matlow, ex-police chief Mark Saunders, former deputy mayor Ana Bail?o, and former Liberal provincial education minister Mitzie Hunter. The daytime debate saw crossfire between candidates who had previously aimed many of their attacks in earlier debates at front-runner Chow. The latest Forum Research poll indicates Chow continues to grow her lead with support from around 38 per cent of decided voters. Chow and Saunders sparred over the budget later in the debate, with Saunders asking Chow how she would work with a police service he claimed she did not like.

The BC Wildfire Service says the Donnie Creek wildfire has grown into one of the largest blazes over the last century in the province. BC Wildfire Service records show it ranks second in provincial history, following the 2017 Plateau Fire at 5,210 square kilometres. Wildfire Service information officer Julia Caranci says the size and the impact of fires are two different subjects. Florida was torched for a second consecutive game, losing 7-2 to the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday to fall into a 2-0 deficit in the best-of-seven series. Vegas’ 12 goals match the most by a team through the first two games of the Cup Final since the NHL expansion era began in 1967-68. Sergei Bobrovsky, the hottest goaltender in hockey going into the final, was pulled midway through Game 2 after allowing four goals on 13 shots to the Golden Knights. He now has more misconducts (3) than he does goals (1) in his first Stanley Cup Final appearance.
