Nova Scotia realtors say a new federal law that bans non-Canadian citizens from buying a home will only slow down an already-slow housing market in this province. But it's a move that sales representative Angela Cowan of Exit Real Estate Professionals in Halifax says will only make a cold Nova Scotia market even cooler. "I don't think it's going to have any impact but a negative impact for Nova Scotia," Cowan said. For now, the Nova Scotia Association of Realtors (NSAR) is advising its members about how to deal with the new law.

Fees for public daycare in Newfoundland and Labrador are now $10 a day, but one advocate says more spaces are needed. The federal-provincial agreement for affordable daycare fees was signed in 2021 and became a reality for many parents across the province on Jan. 2. Gillian Pearson, a child-care researcher and advocate, says the drop in fees is "a timely reduction" as families and their budgets grapple with prolonged inflation. "That's really where the bottleneck is for expanding these spaces," Pearson said. Ski lifts were largely empty at Mont Saint-Bruno on Sunday after rain and warm weather settled in over Quebec. The warm weather that has settled in over Quebec is an anomaly, he said, but one that is becoming more common. Christian Dufour, the marketing director for Les Sommets, said ski resorts will adapt to the warm weather. The warm weather has mired other winter sports too.

New figures released by British Columbia's property assessment agency show the province's most valuable residential property, which is owned by billionaire Lululemon founder Chip Wilson, is worth about $1 million more than it was in the previous year's assessment. Wilson's seven bedroom, nine bathroom mansion on Vancouver's Kitsilano waterfront is valued at $74,089,000, an increase of 1.3 per cent or $942,000 from the previous year, according to B.C. The 2023 numbers, based on market valuations from July 2022, were posted online Monday. Assessment has released its 2023 property values online based on valuations from July 2022. Still, Murao said most property owners can expect to see a five to 15 per cent increase in their 2023 assessment.

Actor Jeremy Renner was injured in a weather-related accident today while plowing snow near his home in the Mount Rose Highway area of Nevada, according to a statement from his publicist, Sam Mast. Renner is currently in critical but stable condition at a local hospital, and his family is by his side. The extent of Renner’s injuries and the cause of the accident have not yet been disclosed, and the Major Accident Investigation Team is currently looking into the circumstances. Season Two of “Mayor of Kingstown” is scheduled to begin on Paramount+ on January 15. According to Environment Canada, heavy rain is expected in parts of southern Ontario starting late Monday night. Between 20 and 45 millimeters of rain is expected in Hamilton, Brantford, St. Catharines and other Niagara communities, the weather service said in issuing a rainfall warning Monday. Environment Canada said frozen ground has little capacity to absorb rain, saying localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas. Temperatures are expected to hover around 1C in the Niagara Region and Hamilton. The Niagara region, particularly areas near Lake Erie including Port Colborne and Fort Erie, experienced heavy snowfall and flooding during the Christmas weekend blizzard.

The ground conditions are saturated and water levels are already above normal. The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) expects water levels in streams and rivers will respond to the forecast rain with runoff totals similar in magnitude to the event of last week. The UTRCA expects water levels to be elevated over the remainder of the week but does not expect serious flooding at this time. Flood control reservoirs are especially hazardous due to fluctuating water levels.

Canada has a well-documented shortage of doctors and nurses — a problem made worse, doctors say, by the increasing administrative burden they face. And … a lot of the funding that comes and goes into the health system is temporary money." Changing how health care is deliveredThe burden on the hospital system could be significantly reduced, doctors say, if more health care services were delivered outside of a hospital setting. Doctors say that moving elective surgeries out of hospitals and into surgical centres would also help free up operating rooms for more urgent surgeries.
