In fact, “The Rig” was something of a “Game of Thrones” and “Line of Duty” reunion. Scottish actor Martin Compston, Steve in “Line of Duty,” was the first one cast in the six-part series, which was filmed in Scotland. He was joined by “Line of Duty” alum Mark Bonnar, Rochenda Sandall, Richard Pepple and Owen Teale, the Welsh actor who also starred in “Game of Thrones” along with “Rig” cast mates Glen, Mark Addy and Emun Elliott. Although the first Immigration Act was not issued until two years after Confederation, it was from 1867 onwards that the movement of people to Canada could be described as immigration and no longer just as colonization, explains Steven Schwinghamer, a researcher and historian at the Canadian Museum of Immigration. He says that “the process of colonization, which is ongoing,” continues to affect the reality of Indigenous peoples and informs the country’s migration policies. Under the various treaties that regulate the relationship between Indigenous peoples and the federal and provincial governments, they theoretically have a say, “but in reality, they don’t,” Schwinghamer says. In it, the federal authorities are called upon to provide more information to newcomers about “the diversity of Canada’s Indigenous peoples, including treaties and residential school history,” as well as to amend the citizenship oath. These calls to action were partially heeded, and also raise questions about the role that immigrants can play in the long march towards reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.

Carbon tax revenue from the industrial sector will save the industry an estimated $3.7 billion in federal carbon taxes between now and 2030, compared to federal carbon pricing, the province says. The federal carbon tax is set to increase to $65 per tonne from $50 per tonne. The increase is in addition to a four per cent rate increase that came into effect on Sept. 1, 2022, and an additional four per cent increase slated to take effect on April. The panel said SaskEnergy could maintain its commodity rate increase of 31 per cent, which took effect in August, and its eight per cent delivery rate increase for this fiscal year. "Indexation of the provincial Personal Income Tax (PIT) system preserves the real value of personal tax credits, and the income tax brackets, as well as benefits such as the Saskatchewan Low-Income Tax Credit," the news release said.

Pierre Poilievre doesn’t like anti-Trudeau flags, but understands anger behind themOTTAWA — Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he doesn't like the expletive-laden flags some Canadians are using to denounce Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, but that he understands the anger fuelling such displays. "I don't like the flags, and I don't like rage," Poilievre said during an end-of-year news conference in Ottawa on Friday. The comments follow a blog post by former Conservative leader Erin O'Toole, who said one of his hopes for 2023 "is to see fewer profanity-laden Trudeau flags across Canada." The anti-Trudeau flags have become particularly linked to the "Freedom Convoy" protests, whose members Poilievre courted during his successful run for the Conservative leadership earlier this year. Asked about O'Toole's blog post and the flags, Poilievre said it's easy for politicians to tell people to stop complaining.

In the glorious culmination of Messi’s quest to win that one precious World Cup, never mind three, the world found the Argentine maestro’s joy and with it the No. Yet there is a truth in this final three words from Neymar … because in his innocence and joy, at least, Pelé will be forever.
