“There is a lot of CBC bashing going on, somewhat stoked by the leader of the Opposition (Pierre Poilievre),” Catherine Tait, president of the CBC, told the Globe and Mail in a recent interview. Ms. Tait has demonstrated a failure to understand the appropriate role of a Crown corporation president. Senior officials, especially deputy ministers and Crown corporation presidents, are supposed to have political acuity. How should Crown corporation leaders conduct themselves in dealing with an attack on their organization from a member of Parliament? The substance and the tenor of Macklem’s remarks are appropriate for a Crown corporation head when responding to a politician’s criticism.

Despite the rupture in Arctic cooperation with Russia’s since its invasion of Ukraine a year ago, Canada’s relationship with the other circumpolar nations is stronger than ever, Heidi Kutz, Ottawa’s top Arctic official, told a Toronto conference this week. Kenneth Hoegh,Greenland’s head of representation to Canada and US, agreed, saying the agreement, and the August Nunavut-Greenland MoU were important building blocks to a stronger North American Arctic. The MoU was signed in Nuuk and pledged closer cooperation and examining greater mobility for people between the two regions. “We want a much stronger partnership with North America,” Hoegh said. “I see a focus on North American pan-Arctic cooperation that hopefully will develop much stronger in years to come especially with more tade.
Assisted suicide law should be expanded to include children, a Canadian parliamentary committee has said. Reckless ideaWe don’t just need to delay this dangerous expansion of assisted suicide. MP Mark Strahl criticised the “reckless idea” to expand assisted suicide rather than protecting vulnerable people by offering the support they need. He said: “We don’t just need to delay this dangerous expansion of assisted suicide. He said: “Given the current state of Canada, where vulnerable people continue to be pressured [into] euthanasia on a frequent basis, it is inappropriate for the government to consider these radical expansions to the euthanasia law.”
Rescuers with backhoes and bulldozers dug through tons of earth and rubble Thursday for 48 people missing after a landslide buried an open-pit mine in northern China. Cranes and other pieces of heavy equipment could be seen, along with covered trucks. Police are investigating the cause of the collapse and some people have been detained, Chang said. The official Xinhua News Agency said about 900 rescuers with heavy equipment were on the scene and they had resumed the search by Thursday morning.

A year in hell: Ukraine remembers the day the Russians came into forceA thoughtful silence usually ensues when you ask people in Ukraine where they were and what they were doing the day Russia dropped the pretense and launched an all-out invasion. CBC News has covered the Russian invasion of Ukraine from the start. But there is a difference between how the West remembers 9/11 and how Ukrainians remember the beginning of the Russian war. Hughes, 20, now a volunteer in Ukraine with Canadian charity HUGS, was working construction in Calgary at the time. “I actually want to live in Ukraine after the war and see how it flourishes and how it is rebuilt.
We’re still a long way from adequate funding for the single-payer universal health care system envisaged by Tommy Douglas. Let us not forget that the crisis in health care is not in infrastructure (there are enough operating rooms). Repealing it and paying health care heroes what they are worth will save money compared to what temp agencies are charging. To help us afford the health care Canadians deserve, increase the low rate at which corporations are taxed. The other problem is that the provinces have, for decades, spent less on health care than the feds have given them.
