Wilson Williams (Sxwíxwtn), a Squamish Nation Councillor and Spokesperson, will deliver the keynote address at VIU’s Indigenous Speakers Series event on March 20. One aspect of history that Sxwíxwtn, now a Squamish Nation councillor and spokesperson, learned about was the fate of the Nation’s traditional village in what is now downtown Vancouver. In 1867, when First Nations were put on reservations, 88 acres were allocated to the Nation at Sen̓áḵw. “My great grandfather and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh lawyers, environmentalists and activists fiercely fought for decades to have these lands rightfully returned to our Nation,” said Sxwíxwtn. “We hope this development inspires more Indigenous governments to start their own economic development projects,” said Sxwíxwtn.

While taking his son to the park one morning, Vancouver resident Peter Davidson was treated to a very rare sight. As Davidson recounted to CBC News, a bald eagle landed to drink from a nearby puddle. As much as we wish he was right, Bruno and the bird weren't exactly the best of friends. Still, the curious cat inched closer and closer to the eagle. Though the two never came nose-to-beak, Davidson said, "the eagle sort of puffed itself up and did sort of a bluff charge or two."

If so, it will be a disturbing reality long after Trudeau, Biden, Macron, Sunak and European heads of state are long gone. This is the grand context behind Russia’s incursion into Ukraine, and it is authentic and prescient to the Russian people. There is only one way this Russian expansionism ends, which will occur when the Russian people have had enough. When they see they are sacrificing for the war effort at home only to see defeat abroad, they will combine to bring about change. This will be a long war, not because neither side can win but because one side has delusions of grandeur that can only be overturned at home.
