Luke DePalatis, right, gets a cooling spritz of water from Michael Abel during a rally by striking writers and actors outside Warner Bros. studios Friday, July 14, 2023, in Burbank, Calif. This marks the first day actors formally joined the picket lines, more than two months after screenwriters began striking in their bid to get better pay and working conditions and have clear guidelines around the use of AI in film and television productions. On both coasts, though, there was a buoyant mood in the air as picket lines were reinvigorated by the support of some of the 65,000 actors who comprise SAG-AFTRA (98% of members voted to approve a strike back in June). Yet, look at this — our picket lines are more full than ever and now have another union on strike with us.”SAG and WGA last went on simultaneous strikes more than six decades ago. It’s the fact that Bob Chapek, Bob Iger, David Zaslav are making untold millions in bonuses while writers and actors are going to the Emmys with negative bank accounts.”

Some things were non-negotiable: the baby grand piano, her grandmother’s rocking chair, a pair of Aubusson rugs. These were among the cherished possessions Joan Healy just had to keep when she and her husband Tom moved into a condo half the size of their 5,000-square-foot house. Pieces with strong sentimental value should stay with their downsizing owners, to create a space that “still feels very much like home with things they love,” said Gillies. Here, her floor plans showed that the dining room table or an antique mahogany sideboard had to go. “Endlessly bored” with ubiquitous white decor, Healy was emphatic that the condo should come alive with colour.

The paper drew on satellite imagery of wildfire smoke, air quality records and labour market data in the U.S.One of the things that really surprised me about wildfire smoke is that in the United States, the geography of wildfire smoke is very different from the geography of fires, said Molitor. Shuai Pan, the lead author, had previously looked at the effects of pollution from the transportation sector, but became interested in the consequences of wildfire smoke while doing his doctoral work in the U.S.Epidemiological research suggests exposure to wildfire smoke is associated with increased mortality and certain common respiratory diseases, Pan said. Those numbers would be far higher if the research had drawn on this summer's smoky air, Pan said. In the midst of Canada's record wildfire season this year, Dave Sawyer, an environmental economist at the Climate Institute of Canada, tried to calculate (new window) the health cost of smoke in this country. Sawyer said the economic toll of wildfire smoke is yet another reason to act on climate change.

Further, Paris 2024 is poised to revolutionize the traditional Olympic experience—unless security concerns put a damper on the celebrations. Paris 2024 thus marks an inflection point for the CBC. While our athletes will be vying for gold in their respective sports, CBC will be competing to secure its place in the heart of Canadian public life.

In the absence of targeted de-radicalization programs for terrorism offenders in prisons, experts say Canada can’t ensure they won’t reoffend. “The nature of these offences suggests you have the potential to cause serious harm to many people should you return to your offence cycle and re-offend,” reads the Parole Board of Canada decision. Some other terrorism offenders have been released and reoffended before, in Canada and abroad. Upon entering federal custody, radicalized offenders and convicted terrorists, like all offenders, are assessed to determine risks and needs. The parole board assesses whether the offender should be released, and part of that is determining whether the person is likely to reoffend.
