“They wound up with a guy who fits better anyway,” the source said. “VanVleet is going to be able to give them scoring they need, but he’s not going to dominate the ball the way Harden would, the way Harden does. “People look at (Harden’s) assists (2022-23 NBA leader per game with 10.7) and say, ‘Oh, he gives it up.’ But those numbers have a lot to do with the fact the ball’s in his hands most of the time. He holds onto it until he can make a play, and, especially with a young team, you want to get people used to moving the ball — and moving without the ball. If you keep cutting like the coach wants you to and you hardly ever get the ball, you’re going to stop cutting.”

It seemed like a perfectly believable story: Two teenagers in Canada posed as members of Coinbase’s support team and scammed an American man out of $4.2 million in Bitcoin and Ethereum. (However, whether that email was the ultimate source for the story has yet to be determined.) However, the entire story—from the teenagers’ alleged heist to their arrest—is a sham, according to the Hamilton Police Service. “[We] can confirm this investigation did not occur and the email did not originate from the Hamilton Police Service,” the police said in an official statement. In January 2018, in the village of Irvington, N.Y., 15-year-old Ellis Pinsky, nicknamed “Baby Al Capone,” allegedly stole almost $24 million from crypto millionaire Michael Terpin.

“The brackets had been deliberately set up so the Globetrotters and Renaissance couldn’t both make it to the finals,” Abdul-Jabbar said about the 1939 tournament field. “It would’ve been unacceptable to the White audiences, players and owners to have two Black teams eliminate all the White teams. So, having the Renaissance win was a win for Blacks — not just as players, but as management.” Douglas and the Renaissance continued etching their legacies as the 1940s continued. In exhibition games, they made $500 per appearance and earned a gate percentage when playing against newly formed ABL squads. Clifton (Renaissance-high 24 points) and George Mikan (game-high 40) dueled in a hotly contested bout.

CBC made the announcement Wednesday in an unsigned editor’s note atop an amended online version of the original Jan. 19 story. “Our sources have insisted that Crown prosecutors felt political pressure regarding the Coutts, (Alta. ), cases, but they are not able to confirm that the emails they originally described were sent directly from the premier’s office to the Crown,” said the editor’s note. “As such, we have updated this story and related pieces, removing references to direct contact between the premier’s office and prosecutors — which the premier has vehemently denied. Smith’s office has threatened to sue the CBC for defamation for months over the story, but has yet to formally launch a claim.

OTTAWA — In its first direct response to threats from big tech platforms promising to retaliate against the Liberals’ controversial online news law, the federal government announced Wednesday it would halt all of its advertising on Meta’s Facebook and Instagram. Both companies have long opposed the law, arguing that their platforms generate significant traffic and revenue for news publishers. The federal Conservatives also oppose the law, framing it as an act of censorship that will only further imperil Canada’s embattled news industry. Both tech titans have pledged to remove Canadian news content from major platforms like Google Search, Facebook and Instagram for their users in Canada. According to the most recently available data on the federal government’s advertising expenditures, Ottawa spent $11,423,728 on advertising on Facebook and Instagram from April 2021 to March 2022.
