For the first time, 32 teams will compete for this year’s World Cup title, up from 24 in 2019. Iconic stars like Christine Sinclair, Megan Rapinoe and Marta are believed to be playing in their last World Cup. As big as it all seemed two years ago in Tokyo when Canada’s best female soccer players won Olympic gold, women’s soccer has managed to get much bigger, and at warp speed. This World Cup should give that effort a boost. Any business interested in using sport as an advertising vehicle ignores women’s sports, and women’s soccer, at its peril.

Canadian filmmaker and deepsea explorer James Cameron said Tuesday that the implosion of the Titan submersible that killed five people last month was an extreme outlier in decades of safe exploration. Remotely operated vehicles have retrieved parts of the Titan from the ocean floor, as well as what are believed to be human remains. The submersible broke apart as it neared the Titanic wreckage on June 18, killing all five people aboard, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush. “It’s an emotional shock.”Cameron was in Ottawa Tuesday for the opening of a new exhibition about his own submersible, the Deepsea Challenger. Cameron also said he wouldn’t be surprised to see new regulatory efforts in response to the Titan implosion.

A former Northwestern football player filed the first lawsuit against Pat Fitzgerald and members of the school’s leadership, seeking damages stemming from a hazing scandal that cost the former football coach his job. The lawsuit allegations include naked players in locker rooms forcing freshmen to also strip naked and then perform various acts. “Protecting the welfare of every student at Northwestern University is central to our mission and something we approach with the utmost seriousness,” Yates said. At least eight former Northwestern football players have retained attorneys following recent revelations that led to Fitzgerald’s firing and sharp criticism of university leadership for its initial response to the allegations. Fitzgerald, who led Northwestern for 17 seasons and was a star linebacker for the Wildcats, has maintained he had no knowledge of the hazing.

Renters in British Columbia have received notices from landlords warning them against installing air conditioning units in their suites, or risk jeopardizing their tenancies. Health Minister Adrian Dix said at least 50 per cent of the free air conditioning units were expected to be installed in apartments or multi-unit dwellings. But weeks later, tenants and tenant advocates are speaking out, saying their landlords have discouraged them from using air conditioning units. Ryan Le Neal purchased a standing air conditioning unit for his New Westminster apartment three years ago. The Cyber Trust initiative was first announced in October following a meeting between White House and tech industry representatives. The proliferation of so-called smart devices has coincided with growing cybercrime in which one insecure device can often give a cyberintruder a dangerous foothold on a home network. An April report from the cybersecurity firm Bitdefender and networking equipment company NetGear, based on their monitoring of smart homes, found that the most vulnerable devices in 2022 were, far and away, smart TVs, followed by smart plugs, routers and digital video recorders. Providers of numerous smart home devices often don’t update and patch software fast enough to thwart newly emerging malware threats.
