The Mercury News reporter Will McCarthy writes about a stalled California State Senate bill that would have tripled the fines paid by refineries for emitting toxic pollutants. In a nutshell:The bill, AB 1465, sponsored by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks, was postponed until 2024 at the request of Wicks herself. From an environmental perspective, refinery pollution contributes to air and water contamination. Water pollution can occur through leaks, spills, or runoff, affecting aquatic life and water quality. Altogether, refinery pollution underscores the importance of stringent regulations and monitoring to safeguard public health and the environment.

In a nutshell:Companies are increasingly embracing the concept of "plastic neutrality" by purchasing plastic credits, which represent one metric ton of plastic waste removed from the environment. However, skepticism exists regarding whether plastic credits truly offset the environmental impacts of plastic production and use. "The only real solution to the full suite of plastic pollution problems is to stop making so much plastic in the first place." Excessive plastic production exacerbates plastic pollution, which poses threats to marine life and ecosystems. Moreover, petrochemical companies, invested in plastic production, may hinder efforts to cap or reduce plastic manufacturing, perpetuating environmental and health risks.

A group of Canadian filmmakers has joined forces with Hollywood A-listers in asking the Toronto International Film Festival to end sponsorship ties with the Royal Bank of Canada because of the bank's funding of the oil and gas industry. Organizers of the campaign called RBC Off Screen say the financial institution's track record of investing in fossil fuels runs contrary to the socially progressive values the film festival purports to stand for. Kephart and Gutierrez, who started the campaign, say they have the support of more than 200 industry workers. The group's statement says RBC is one of the largest financiers of oil and gas projects in the world and supports projects that have negatively impacted Indigenous lands and racialized people. TIFF's vice-president of public relations, Judy Lung, said in a statement the festival appreciates the sustainability concerns being brought forward, and that they are talking to RBC about them.

Callum Shoniker knows what it’s like to be a member of PAW Patrol’s fandom. Like most kids, Shoniker had a favourite character: Rocky, the eco-puppy who reuses and recycles anything he can get his paws on. Unlike most kids, Shoniker would later voice his preferred pup in a blockbuster film franchise alongside Kim Kardashian. Long before Shoniker was cast in 2021’s PAW Patrol: The Movie—and its sequel, PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, out this month—he cut his teeth as Rumpelstiltskin on the theatre-camp circuit. In April, Shoniker, now 14, debuted as class clown Mike Cavalleri on YTV’s live-action preteen series, Popularity Papers.

September 12, 2023 —Oil production around the southwest Manitoba community of Virden remains steady, and while diversifying the economy away from fossil fuels will be key for the region in the future, it’s not an immediate concern for some local leaders. Residents of Virden — which lies about 70 km west of Brandon — and the surrounding area have benefited financially for several decades from oil extraction. It’s something Bruce Dunning, a town councillor who runs a consulting business in Manitoba’s relatively small oil industry, has seen first-hand. Fletcher Baragar, a professor in the department of economics at University of Manitoba, said the oil industry is only a small piece of the provincial economy, but it has had a big impact on the regional economy. “We certainly did have our mini boom but we’re on the tail end of that now,” he saidRead here

Tamara Lich, centre, walks into the Ottawa Courthouse with her lawyer Lawrence Greenspon Sept. 5, 2023, the day her trial began. As their trial enters its second week, defence lawyer Lawrence Greenspon looked to block the testimony of eight or nine Crown witnesses whose testimony he cast as irrelevant to anything at issue in the case. "If that evidence was to be called as part of the trial, then we're perfectly entitled as the defence to call a whole bunch of businesses that prospered during the Freedom Convoy." The Crown lawyer in the trial of lead convoy organizers says evidence from the people and businesses who lived through the convoy is 'critical.' One of the witnesses on the Crown's list is Zexi Li, a plaintiff in a civil trial against the convoy organizers.

An ambulance responding to an emergency was hit by a pickup truck — so the paramedics inside helped out after the crash, California officials said. A Los Angeles Fire Department ambulance was responding to a call when a pickup truck T-boned it while crossing an intersection on Sept. 10, according to a post on Facebook by the fire department. The pickup truck had two men in it who ended up colliding with a pole, getting trapped in the wreck, officials said. The two paramedics inside the ambulance were able to get out of the crashed vehicle and started to give medical attention to the “two severely injured” men, fire officials said. The two men were taken to a trauma center in critical condition while the paramedics were taken to a hospital for non-life threatening injuries, the post said.

The guidelines recommend caution when using AI for things like public communications on social media or automating assessments, recommendations or decisions about clients. The government's new rules on generative AI are "not about replacing employees at all," says Treasury Board President Anita Anand. Carr said the government's new generative AI guidelines need some work. Things that we had to do by hand can be done in nanoseconds by computers using AI, she said. Chris Aylward, national president of the Public Service Alliance of Canada, says AI should enhance public service jobs - not replace them.
