In the fairy tale ending, the young princess and the prince, having slayed the dragon, ride off into the sunset together, mounted on a white stallion. In the modern fairy tale, two young people walk into a house. Recently, the latter tale has become as dream-like as the first. The end goal is marriage – that’s what I’ve been told by the generations that have come before me. But now that it’s down, I’m rethinking the whole fairy tale ending.

A former President of the American Republic is indicted on criminal charges in Georgia. Is this j’accuse tempest a sign of the imminent fall of the American Republic? Toward the end of the Roman Republic, the city was rife with “social war.” Rapid imperial expansion strained every aspect of the Roman system. This brings us to the courtroom drama’s already discussed, signs of a moral crisis besetting the American Republic, according to Cicero’s analysis. The prescience of the experts I spoke with as early as 1989 for It’s a Matter of Survival is astounding. Had we taken their warnings seriously we might have avoided the terrible consequences they accurately predicted. They didn’t hold back, especially as the global response to the crisis is not nearly enough to meet the challenge. Warnings from scientists and Indigenous Peoples aren’t new. Experts working with organizations from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to the International Energy Agency tell us we must curtail rampant consumerism, leave fossil fuels behind and shift quickly to renewable energy.
