For more than a decade while it was in power, the former Conservative government railed against a great, faceless bureaucracy it blamed for undermining its ambitions for the Department of National Defence (DND). Blair also claimed that under the current government, defence spending is in the process of doubling to $40 billion annually. When the Conservatives cut the defence budget, that third category was the one that took a major hit. Perhaps that's a pause, a moment to pause for reflection and ask ourselves, is this really the time to cut the defence budget? He said it was rather a reduction in the pace at which we have been increasing the defence budget.

October 4, 2023 —By now you already know, the NDP won a majority vote in the provincial election on October 3rd, 2023. The NDP won 34 seats, PC’s 22 and the Liberals won one seat. The win also added a new chapter to Manitoba’s history books with it’s first First Nations leader as Premier with Wab Kinew. The University of Toronto’s Transitional Year Programme (TYP) is celebrating 53 years of the access-to-education program with a gala in the Great Hall at Hart House on Oct. 4. Former TYP faculty Horace Henriques, Safia Gahayr and Roslyn Thomas-Long will also be honoured at the event. Every spring, TYP holds a graduation ceremony to celebrate the students who completed the eight-month program. They include Floria Kangootui, who graduated this spring with a bachelor’s degree from U of T’s Faculty of Arts & Science. Fallon Young, now in her third year of studies at U of T, told CBC News the program changed her life.

According to Dr. Melissa Lem, people who spend two hours per week in nature are not only happier, but healthier. Lem is to present the findings on October 12 at the UBC Okanagan Distinguished Speaker Series, presented by the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She also serves as the President of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, and Director of PaRx, Canada’s first national, evidence-based nature prescription program to improve mental health. RCMP said a pickup truck went off Cap Saint Louis Road in Saint-Louis de Kent and into the ditch. The driver, a 24-year-old man from Kings County in P.E.I., died at the scene as a result of his injuries. A 28-year-old man, the only other person in the pickup, was transported to the hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries.
