Calgary police have been carrying out enforcement sweeps downtown in what they say is an effort to improve public safety. But as CBC’s Jo Horwood reports, the sweeps aren't a complete solution to the complicated problem of rising disorder downtown. The first blitz, Operation Order, happened Nov. 5 throughout the downtown core, at a time when violence there was at a six-year high, according to city statistics. Two more single-day blitzes would follow: Operation Jingle All the Way in December, which focused on the south leg of the CTrain line, and the second Operation Order in February. During the second Operation Order, she spoke of the needs for more services and shelter options.

The Holt government has reached a deal with Ottawa on compensation for tens of millions of dollars in lost sales tax revenue from the Christmas season in 2024. The Trudeau government’s HST holiday meant it wasn’t collecting the provincial portion of the tax on behalf of five provinces that are part of the tax model, including New Brunswick. Holt and LeBlanc confirmed at a joint news conference on Friday that Ottawa will provide $60 million toward bilingual digital health records in New Brunswick. “The federal government made good on their word and we're pleased to have gotten $60 million returned to the people of New Brunswick,” Holt said. The other $40 million appears in budget estimates tabled in the legislature for the 2026-27 fiscal year that begins April 1.

In 2025, the department forecasted 255,360 new study permits, but as of September 2025, only 50,370 were approved. The auditor general’s report also found that there was an increase in the number of study permit extensions relative to new study permits.

Winnipeg police say they've arrested the alleged leader of a retail theft crime ring, accusing him of having a hand in recruiting several shoplifters to steal brand-name power tools. The ringleader would purchase the tools through a third-party and resell them at a profit, the release said. He's been released on an undertaking and is slated to appear in court at a later date, the release said. The 23 shoplifting incidents — which happened in a three-month-period ending on March 12, the day the man was arrested — all involved the theft of brand-name tools and power tools, police said. The investigations that led to this arrest and the one into the alleged shoplifting ringleader were not related, Chancy said.

Despite worries about how last year's drought would affect maple syrup production this spring, producers in Nova Scotia say the season is off to a good start so far. Peter MacLean has been producing maple syrup at his farm on Dalhousie Mountain in Pictou County west of New Glasgow, N.S., since 1992. He said theoretically, drought conditions "could have a huge effect" on maple syrup production, since the lack of water decreases the photosynthesis taking place in a tree and therefore the amount of sugar it produces. The sugar season began in Nova Scotia a couple of weeks ago. (Anjuli Patil/CBC)However, like MacLean, MacKenzie said the runs have been going "pretty good" this year.
