MLA Daniel Qavvik’s resignation marks 6th departure from cabinet since 2021Nunavut’s Environment minister has resigned from cabinet. A new release issued Thursday evening said Daniel Qavvik resigned for personal reasons on Wednesday. Qavvik, who was appointed minister of Environment in September 2023, was also the minister of Culture and Heritage, and minister responsible for energy, and languages. Akeeagok will take over as minister of Culture and Heritage and minister responsible for languages. Minister David Joanasie will take over the Environment portfolio, and also become minister responsible for energy.

Since Influenza A or flu viruses are named after the animal where they are most commonly found, avian viruses are naturally found in birds. H5N1 is a highly transmissible and usually mild disease in geese, swans and seagulls as well as domestic birds such as chickens and turkeys. Scientists at the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg sequenced the genome of the virus from the infected B.C. The tests showed the version of the virus is related to the avian influenza viruses from the ongoing outbreak in poultry in B.C., the Public Health Agency of Canada said Wednesday.

Irving-owned company taken off Wolastoqey title claim suit – CBCNov 15, 2024Strescon reaches deal with Wolastoqey Nation to fund scholarship program in tradesOne of the many industrial companies named in a large title claim from the Wolastoqey Nation in New Brunswick has been removed from the lawsuit. Chief Patricia Bernard of Madawaska First Nation says a deal has been reached with Strescon, a Saint John-based concrete company and a subsidiary of John Irving’s Ocean Capital. Bernard said the company offered to provide a bursary scholarship for Wolastoqey students in the trades through New Brunswick Community College. The scholarship has a value of $120,000, and two students annually would be able to receive a bursary of up to $5,000.
