The family of a man accused of killing his mother when he was a teen applauded and cried in a Winnipeg courtroom after a Manitoba judge ordered a stay of proceedings in the case Monday morning. Since early February, a jury has heard arguments about whether the 23-year-old man killed his 51-year-old mother in 2019. The judge said there was never any evidence the accused knew his mother did not have a will when she died. "This was a highly prejudicial series of questions, intended to suggest [he] had a financial motive to murder his mother,” Champagne said. A stay of proceedings in a homicide trial is uncommon, but the Crown has 30 days to appeal, Lockyer said.

Last season, he played 15 games and finished with his lowest defensive completion percentage of his career — 62.3%. A running back just won the Super Bowl MVP, you need a above-average back that can still run the rock in this league. I think he plans on the tag even if they can’t agree on a new deal, but whatever.

After months of lobbying from the Jewish community and escalating antisemitic violence, Toronto police are moving to restrict anti-Israel demonstrators from residential areas near Bathurst and Sheppard, the heart of the city’s Jewish community. Protests have occurred there regularly since not long after the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel by Hamas. Three prominent Toronto-based Jewish groups had called for action after three synagogues were targeted by gunfire, and a March 14 incident at Bathurst and Sheppard where anti-Israel protesters held signs that dehumanized Jews and promoted hate-inciting antisemitic rhetoric. “Our community has consistently refused to accept the normalization of intimidation on residential streets in the heart of a heavily Jewish neighbourhood,” B’nai Brith Canada said Monday in a social media post lauding the police policy change. “The Toronto Police Service facilitates lawful demonstrations while balancing the rights of participants with the safety of the broader public,” she said.
